Preview: After scraping past Villarreal here at Old Trafford last time out in Group F, Manchester United will need to produce a much more cohesive performance if they are to register a second successive victory. It would come at the expense of an Atalanta team keen to solidify their place atop the group.

Manchester United – Solskjaer needs a massive week?

A big week for this Manchester United team, and in particular manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, begins on Wednesday with the first of two important home games. Sunday sees them host long-time rivals Liverpool in the league, with defeat leaving them a minimum of seven points off top spot. Before then comes the visit of this dangerous Atalanta side on the back of some unconvincing displays in Europe this season.

United were well below par in both matches so far in Group F. Jesse Lingard’s errant back pass with seconds remaining summed up a miserable evening in Switzerland, in which Aaron Wan-Bissaka was shown a red card in a 2-1 loss to Young Boys. Things didn’t improve to any great length in their next outing, despite scraping a 2-1 win at home to Villarreal who were only undone by Cristiano Ronaldo’s last-gasp winner.

Saturday’s 4-2 defeat away at Leicester City means it is two wins in seven (D1 L4), leaving Solskjaer under huge pressure once more. At Old Trafford, it is one win in four (D1 L2) – the Villarreal smash and grab the exception. Solskjaer is not guaranteed to find solace in this competition either. His 58% loss ratio is the highest of any manager to have taken charge of 10+ games for an English club.

Atalanta – Le Dea primed to make life difficult?

On the same weekend their upcoming opponents were seen leaking four goals, Atalanta were scoring four of their own, putting newly promoted Empoli well and truly to the sword on Sunday. It was their third win in five competitive away matches this season (D2), going unbeaten on their travels so far in 2021-22. A record they will be confident of preserving beyond Wednesday’s visit to Old Trafford.

While this will be the club’s first visit to the so called Theatre of Dreams, the Italians are well versed in England. Atalanta have faced English opposition six times on these shores and boast a commendable 50% win rate, bringing up their third victory with a 2-0 scoreline against Liverpool at Anfield last season. Moreover, they arrive having lost just one of the last seven Champions League away games (W5 D1).

That was to Real Madrid. It would be no exaggeration to say this current iteration of Manchester United is no Real Madrid. Across those seven most recent Champions League away outings, Atalanta averaged 2.4 goals a game. They have netted 11 in just five competitive away games this season, meanwhile, including in their Matchday 1 2-2 draw in Spain against last season’s Europa League winners Villarreal.

Manchester United Vs Atalanta Betting Advice

Whenever calls for Solskjaer to leave his post as Manchester United manager grow louder, the Norwegian tends to string a few positive results that go some way to silence his critics. This is a huge week for the Norwegian, one he hopes begins with victory at home to an Atalanta outfit unbeaten away from home across all competitions this season. Meanwhile, United have one win in four at Old Trafford.

Manchester United Vs Atalanta – Key Facts:

  • With three points after two played in Group F, Manchester United (W1 L1) sit third in the section, a point behind Atalanta (W1 D1) who lead the way after an unbeaten start.
  • Defeat at the weekend means Manchester United have won only twice in their last seven matches. They are without a clean sheet in eight.
  • Atalanta are unbeaten on the road this season (W3 D2). Meanwhile, Duvan Zapata is bidding to become the first player to register an assist in three successive UCL games for the club.

On current form, I cannot be having Man Utd as such strong favourites. Their performances of late have been dreadful, winning two of last seven and conceding in eight straight games. Meanwhile, Atalanta can be devastating in the final third if allowed to find their stride. They’ve scored on average 2.4 goals across their last seven Champions League away games (W5 D1 L1) and will enjoy facing such porous hosts.
