Are the demands of fighting on two fronts finally starting to take their toll on this triumphant Manchester City side?
City have now lost three of their last five matches as they’ve suffered recent defeats to Basel and Liverpool in the Champions League, as well as being on the end of a humiliating defeat at home to Manchester United in the local derby on the weekend in the Premier League.
Last week’s 3-0 first leg loss at Anfield against Liverpool certainly gave them a severe wake-up call, but Pep Guardiola’s side were again on the losing side against local rivals United despite being 2-0 up, they ended up losing 3-2. The league title will therefore need to be put on ice for a short while, but they’ll have to come out all guns blazing in this return leg with Liverpool.
But Manchester City have another chance to redeem themselves here, and having won 11 of their last 13 on home turf in all competitions (with all of these producing over 2.5 goals), this looks the likely play here.
Onto Liverpool, and they played out an uninspiring 0-0 draw away at Everton in their local merseyside derby on the weekend, and it wasn’t until the final 15 minutes of the match that they found themselves under severe pressure from The Toffees.
Jurgen Klopp stated that the onus of playing attacking football wasn’t on his side, and we can probably expect a similar approach from The Reds here at the Etihad Stadium as they look to preserve their 3-0 lead and progress through to the semi-finals.
However, although Everton were unable to break down Liverpool’s defence, we now have a far more talented and quality Manchester City side looking to do the same, and I believe we could see more goals with a City win here.
