The other match in Group E sees european minnows, Maribor, taking on Spanish side, Sevilla at their Ljudski vrt in Slovenia with only pride at stake for the hosts.
The Slovenian side have found the step up in quality in the Champions League very tough to adjust to as they’ve gained just two points from their group campaign to date, thanks to 1-1 draws both home and away against Spartak Moscow.
Good results for most sides, however, Maribor have also suffered three heavy defeats to tonight’s opponents, Sevilla 3-0, along with 7-0 and 3-0 thrashings at the hands of Group E leaders, Liverpool – so they’ll have their work cut out to get a result tonight I feel, even with home advantage.
Onto Sevilla, and they need a win to all but ensure their passage from the group stages to the knock-out rounds, and as goal difference could well come into the equation of who qualifies, Sevilla will be keen to keep a clean sheet here.
The Spanish side have kept just one clean sheet throughout the group matches, which was at home against Maribor, so they’ll fancy their chances of another shut-out here in order to qualify with the much needed win.
Sevilla’s away results in the Champions League have yielded a mixed return in recent times, and although they took a point off Liverpool in a 2-2 draw, they were then thrashed 5-1 at Spartak Moscow.
The last three meetings between these two sides have ended up in a 2-2 draw along with a 2-1 and 3-0 win for Sevilla, and with all five of Sevilla’s group matches resulting in over 2.5, I fancy more goals in this clash.
