Another Greek side that are in Wednesday night’s first leg action of these third qualifying round matches in the Champions League are PAOK who take on Russian side, Spartak Moscow as my betting tips continue.
PAOK secured their path to this third qualifying round with a heavy 5-1 aggregate win over Swiss outfit, Basel, which raised a few eyebrows with the manner of their easy win over a side who were tipped to figure in the group stages of this competition.
The hosts are in the same boat though as their counterparts, AEK Athens, as they’ve yet to kick a ball in anger domestically, but they’ve had a reasonable pre-season with a win over Antwerp along with draws against Anderlecht and Gent.
In the Champions League, six of PAOK’s last eight ties have seen both teams score, and they’ll be facing a Spartak Moscow side who have already begun their domestic season.
Onto the visitors then, and as mentioned, Spartak Moscow have started their Russian Premier League season in positive fashion, winning 1-0 at home against Orenburg, and then taking a point in a 0-0 draw against crosstown rivals, Lokomotiv Moscow.
As with their opponents, PAOK, Spartak Moscow have enjoyed limited success at Champions League level as they’ve gained just one win from their last nine matches, which was a resounding 5-1 home win over Sevilla last season, but unfortunately, the Russian club are likely to be remembered for their 7-0 annihilation at the hands of Liverpool at Anfield back in December.
Interestingly though, seven of Spartak’s last nine away matches in the Champions League have also seen both teams score, so that’s what my betting tips will go with for this clash.
