PSG Preview – Can PSG continue impressive start?

PSG have been in almost mercurial form leading up to this Matchday 1 clash with Juventus in the group stage of the Champions League as the hosts bring an unbeaten run of seven matches across all competitions into this important opening game, a run that consists of six wins and just one draw to date.

An opening day 4-0 rout of Nantes in the French domestic Super Cup got PSG off and running and the French champions then ran riot in Ligue 1 by inflicting heavy defeats upon Clermont 5-0, Montpellier 5-2 and a 7-1 thrashing of Lille who won the Ligue 1 title just two seasons ago, and having also won their last two away games on the trot in the domestic top flight, PSG will fancy their chances on Tuesday night.

The Paris-based club have also won their last four Champions League ties at home on the trot as well, picking up victories over Manchester City, RB Leipzig, Club Brugge and Real Madrid, scoring a total of 10 goals and conceding just 3 in reply, although they lost to Juventus 3-2 in an international champions cup in America five years ago, in what has been their only meeting in recent times.

PSG have tended to be able to avoid Italian opposition in previous Champions League campaigns with their last meeting being a 2-2 draw at home with Napoli four seasons ago, while form at home at this level hasn’t always been convincing; PSG have won just six of their last 11 home ties and have won by 3 goals or more in just two of these 11 games as well.

Julian Draxler and Timothee Pembele, who are both recovering from knee injuries, are the only players not available for selection from an otherwise healthy PSG squad.

Both teams to score

Juventus Preview – Can Old Lady keep hosts quiet?

Five games into the new Italian top flight season and Juventus still remain unbeaten in Serie A in what has been a circumspect and measured start to their domestic top flight campaign with Juventus winning two and drawing three so far this term, as they have collected wins against Sassuolo and Spezia in 3-0 and 2-0 wins respectively, both of which were at home.

Juventus have also picked up useful points in draws with Sampdoria, Roma and Fiorentina, the former and latter being away from home but the Old Lady are not quite the same team they used to be as the Italian visitors have fallen down the pecking order on the European stage.

Nevertheless, Juventus have lost just three out of their last 14 ties in the Champions League overall and have lost just three ties of their last 13 outings on the road in this competition, so the visitors still stand a reasonable chance of walking away from the Parc des Princes with something on Tuesday night.

Juventus have lost just one of these last 13 away ties by 3 goals or greater, which was a 4-0 loss at Chelsea away from home in the previous campaign.
