Preview: All to play for in the Netherlands after the sides couldn’t be separated in France, playing to a 1-1 draw. PSV will feel the tie is theirs to lose, though, boasting home advantage against Monaco, who have found wins elusive on the road in this competition down the years.

PSV – Dutch side carrying enormous goal threat in Eindhoven?

Ruud Van Nistlerooy’s first taste of the Champions League as manager almost got off to the perfect start. His PSV side came within minutes of closing out victory over in France, but were ultimately forced into settling for a draw which leaves the tie firmly in the balance. It is still advantage to the Dutch outfit, however, PSV having not lost any of four previous home matches in the qualifying rounds of this competition.

That run includes impressive victories against Basel, Galatasaray and Midtjylland – netting three or more in each – and a goalless draw with Benfica in last season’s play-off round. Confidence is also coursing through this team following an electric start to the domestic season. After defeating arch-rivals Ajax, 5-3, to claim the Super Cup, Nistlerooy’s rampant charges then put four past FC Emmen on Saturday.

Key Stat: Each of PSV’s last ten competitive matches have seen them score but also concede, while they would only fail to score 2+ in one of the last eight of these contests – that being the 1-1 draw from the first leg against Monaco.

Monaco – Ligue 1 side must buck negative away record?

Former finalists Monaco, with eight group stage participations, the most recent of which in 2018 when they were unceremoniously eliminated from Europe altogether after failing to win any of six group games, were the team in the ascendancy as the first leg drew to a close. Yet they required an Axel Disasi equaliser, struck ten minutes from the end, to rescue a draw. They now need something special in the Netherlands.

That is probably asking too much though. With that result at the Stade Louis II a week ago, Les Monegasques have now won just two of 17 outings in the competition (D5 L12) going back to 2017 – and one of nine (D4 L4) away from home across this period. On the flip side, it is difficult to argue with some solid recent form. Saturday’s 2-1 win at Strasbourg extending their unbeaten run to 13 (W10 D3).

Key Stat: A 2-0 win over Sparta Prague, in August of last season, remains Monaco’s one and only clean sheet from 20 previous Champions League away matches.

PSV Vs Monaco Betting Advice

The Dutch side went into European mode in the first leg, playing within themselves as they sought out a positive result in France. It was mission accomplished then, a 1-1 draw favouring them ahead of this return leg in the Netherlands where PSV are expected to play with more ambition and aggression. I suspect this will prove too much for Monaco, whose record in European away matches makes them vulnerable.

PSV Vs Monaco – Key Facts:

  • These sides played to a 1-1 scoreline in the first leg, the third draw across seven competitive encounters between the pair. Monaco do have previous for winning in Eindhoven, though, winning two of three visits including in October of last year (1-2).
  • Recent results in Europe, however, does favour a positive outcome on this occasion for PSV who are unbeaten in four as hosts (W3 D1). Meanwhile, Monaco are looking for only their second victory in ten UCL away matches (D4 L4).
  • Both teams have scored in all of PSV’s past 10 competitive fixtures, and each of the last five for Monaco who are without a clean sheet on their travels for eight games.

Despite both sides playing with an air of caution last week, we still got a couple goals. The 1-1 scoreline made it 10 successive competitive matches seeing both teams score for PSV, who’ve scored 10 in three games this season, while it marked the fifth game in a row seeing this occur for Monaco. The latter simply don’t do clean sheets away in Europe meanwhile, but would score in all but two of eleven prior said matches.
