Preview: A pulsating first leg encounter in Glasgow, with the sides playing to a 2-2 draw, has set the tone nicely ahead of the return fixture in Eindhoven. Rangers have never actually lost away to PSV, with this their fourth such fixture, although their recent run away from home in Europe suggests this might change by the end of Wednesday night.

PSV – Advantage with Nistlerooy’s young side?

The Dutch outfit will be the happier contingent at half-time in the tie having left Glasgow with a well-earned 2-2 draw. A rare goal from Ibrahim Sangare had given them a lead shortly before the interval at Ibrox Stadium. However they went in level, and very nearly ended the contest with a defeat following a goalkeeping error. Armando Obispo’s strike 12 minutes from the end ultimately sparring Water Benitez’s blushes.

Back in Eindhoven, where they’ve won 11 of their last 13 competitive matches (D1 L1), PSV can expect to see more possession and a higher shot count than they mustered in Scotland, after trailing Rangers in both regards (56-44% possession and 11 shots to 9) in that first leg. Not that this prevented them from netting multiple goals for the fifth outing in six this term, averaging four a game across these matches.

Key Stat: All six of PSV Eindhoven’s competitive matches so far this season has produced both teams scoring, with their two so far as hosts seeing a total of nine scored inside 90 minutes.

Rangers – Road record points to uphill battle?

With an away record in Europe like theirs, Rangers knew their best hope of progressing most likely hinged on them winning at home. That didn’t happen, despite going in front with 20 minutes remaining of the first leg. Now, they’re well and truly up against in in the Netherlands where, to their credit, they are unbeaten across their three most recent visits (W1 D2). Including a goalless draw here in Eindhoven against PSV in 2011.

Last week’s result preserved The Gers unbeaten home record in Europe (W6 D2). Conversely, they would only win one of the past 11 fixtures (D4 L6) away from home in UEFA competition, with a 2-0 scoreline in Belgium to Union Saint-Gilloise in the round prior a fourth straight defeat outside of Scotland. It is a trend they must buck if they’re to make the group stage draw of this competition for the first time since 2010-11.

Key Stat: Rangers have scored at least two goals in six of their seven competitive games this season, but won just one of their three so far as the visiting side (D1 L1).

PSV Vs Rangers Betting Advice

Whereas PSV were handed the weekend off to prepare solely for this tie, Rangers were put through their paces over the weekend by Hibernian. Giovanni van Bronchorst’s side were held to a 2-2 scoreline in an ill-tempered affair at Easter Road, and both the rigours and frustration of that match could well catch up to them in this second leg. Especially as they’re not the most reliable travelling sides as it is.

PSV Eindhoven Vs Rangers – Key Facts:

  • As the hosts, PSV are yet to register a win against Rangers in three previous attempts (D1 L2), drawing the most recent of these 0-0 in the second leg of the Europa League Round of 16 in 2011.
  • All six PSV Eindhoven games in 2022-23 have featured both teams scoring, with these contests returning on average 5.1 goals. Over 2.5 Goals was a winner in five of the seven competitive Rangers games this term.
  • PSV have found the net inside the first half of all six competitive matches this season. The same was also true of Rangers in their past four matches, including the first leg in Glasgow where both teams scored in the first 45 minutes.

Rangers’ dire away record in Europe, losing the last four such matches, coupled with PSV’s imperious home form, not to mention their ability to score at will, makes the Dutch hosts an easy selection for me. I know Rangers boast an impressive habit of rising to the occasion in Europe, but they’ve now failed to score across their last three road games in European football (vs Braga, Frankfurt and Union-Gilloise) and look to have it all to do.
