Qarabag – Can Qarabag overcome their defeat last time out and keep alive their group stage hopes?

Gurban Gurbanov has been in charge of Qarabag since 2008 and last season seen the club record their ninth title in their history, and the eighth in his tenure. The only time they have failed to win the title in the last nine seasons was back in 2020/21, when, ironically, one of Gurbanov’s former clubs – Neftchi Baku – edged them out. Their sustained domination in Azerbaijan ensures they continue to get the opportunity to play in Europe, and particularly the Champions League.

For all their appearances in the qualifying rounds, the only time Qarabag have reached the group stages of the Champions League was back in 2017/18. They made it to the third round two seasons ago, going out after losing on penalties to Molde.

Qarabag did take advantage of playing in the Europa Conference League last season by making it all the way to the knockout stages of that competition – eventually losing to Marseille. They will have the consolation of dropping into that competition once again should they be unable to reverse their fortunes here.
Qarabag’s home record is very good so that will give them confidence they can do just that. They are unbeaten in their last 20 home games in the league (winning 17). Their only competitive defeat in the last year came at home to Marseille which indicates just how consistent they have been.

Lech Poznan Preview – Will the Polish champions back up their first leg win to progress to the next round?

Lech Poznan won the eighth title in their history last season, and the first in six years. Despite that success, the club saw a change in manager with John van den Brom took the reins. The Dutchman has plenty of experience in his homeland with the likes of AZ and Utrecht, and was also a title winner in Belgium when in charge of Anderlecht.

It has been a mixed start to life at Lech. The Poznan club did lose out in the Polish Super Cup at the weekend, but do hold the valuable 1-0 lead in this contest.

The played who made the difference last week was Swedish striker Mikhael Ishak. Ishak was excellent in the title-winning campaign, netting 18 goals in the league alone, following on from scoring 20 in all competitions the previous season – including eight in the Europa League. Those figures underline his importance to the team and alongwith Joao Amaral, are Lech’s two key players.

Lech were very good on their travels last season, particularly in the latter part of the campaign when they lost only one of their last 11 on the road – a run which included seven victories. They also failed to score in only three of their last 18 away from home which will give them confidence of causing their opponents problems.

Qarabag vs Lech Poznan Betting Advice

Games at this stage of the campaign are always difficult to judge. There is virtually no form to go on and the changes in both squads have yet to really take effect. The first leg proved there was little between the teams and it is likely that will be similar in the return game.

Lech will have to deal with the fact Qarabag are so strong at home and will be used to the conditions, add in the fact that they have more continuity in their ranks and it does make them a justifiable favourite for this game.
