Rangers – Progression hinges on triumphing inside Ibrox?

More than a decade on from their last group stage participation. Rangers haven’t come this close to qualifying for the Champions League proper since doing so automatically, as Scottish champions, in 2010-11. The stakes are naturally huge, however, any lack of recent UCL experience can be offset by some memorable runs elsewhere in Europe, notably in the Europa League where they made the final last term.

The Gers have progressed to the last sixteen and beyond in their three previous European campaigns, winning 12 of 14 two-legged ties over this period. Much of this recent success, meanwhile, can be attributed to the Ibrox factor. Rangers are unbeaten at home for seven European matches (W6 D1), and targeting a fifth successive victory in Glasgow following recent wins over Braga, Dortmund and RB Leipzig.

Key Stat: Rangers have scored at least two goals throughout the entirety of their ongoing seven-game unbeaten run at home in European competition, netting exactly three in three of the last four at Ibrox.

PSV – Dutch won’t be cowered in Glasgow?

Ruud van Nistlerooy’s tally of 56 Champions League goals still holds up well, with it the sixth-best figure in competition history. The 46-year-old’s current goal isn’t putting the back in the net – though, for someone whose lethal finishing made him feared across the continent, he probably wishes it was that simple – but putting the club for whom he is now manager in the UCL group stage draw for the first time since 2018-19.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid star instructs his team to play in a manner befitting of a striker who once thrived in sides that played an attacking brand of football. PSV are that and then some, averaging 3.6 goals per game across five competitive outings under his stewardship. This has been to the detriment of them defensively, though, allowing nine goals so far having yet to register a clean sheet.

Key Stat: PSV are unbeaten so far since appointing Ruud van Nistlerooy as head coach in May, recording three wins and two draws when counting results at the end of 90 minutes only.

Rangers Vs PSV Betting Advice

It is easy to get the impression that this tie could boil down to which of these teams manages to rack up the most goals in their home legs. Rangers have won once in 11 prior away games in European competition, losing each of the last four. So the important of winning this first leg won’t be lost on Giovanni van Bronckhorst, whose side are unbeaten in seven European home games having won each of the last four.

Rangers Vs PSV – Key Facts:

  • The clubs have met on six occasions, all in UEFA competitions, with Rangers coming out on top in three of these contests. However, PSV are unbeaten the last twice (W1 D1), earning a 1-0 at Ibrox in March 2011 during the most recent of those.
  • Rangers have scored two or more in seven consecutive European home games but face opponents that hasn’t stopped scoring this season. PSV have 18 goals from five competitive matches this term (W3 D2), four of these seeing Over 3.5 Goals and BTTS.
  • Tuesday’s hosts haven’t exactly been shy in coming forward either, though, with Giovanni van Brockhorst’s men netting 2+ in all but one of five competitive contests this season (W4 L1).

PSV haven’t actually won any of three recent European matches as hosts, and so a result in Scotland is equally important, if not more so, to their prospects of going through. Where the Dutch outfit excel, however, is scoring goals. They’ve found 18 of them in just five competitive matches this season, but conceded nine. Rangers are on a seven-game streak for scoring 2+ in European home games. Over 2.5 is big at 9/10.
