Even though they have home advantage at their Stadio Olimpico, Roma face a mountain to climb when they take on Liverpool in Wednesday night’s second leg of their Champions League semi-final clash, following a heavy defeat at Anfield last week.
The Italian outfit succumbed to a 5-2 thrashing so they’re expected to come out on the front foot here as they look to repeat their earlier heroics against Barcelona, when Liverpool visit. Roma overturned Barcelona 3-0 in the last home leg in the previous round following a 4-1 loss in the first leg, so perhaps lightning can strike twice in Rome on Wednesday night.
One thing in Roma’s favour is that they scored 2 away goals and this could once again come in to play against The Reds. In addition, Roma have won their last four Champions League ties at home with wins over Chelsea, Qarabag, Shakhtar Donetsk and Barcelona, so they’re unlikely to be over-awed for this one.
Onto Liverpool and they shared a dour and extremely uninteresting 0-0 draw with relegation strugglers, Stoke City in the Premier League on the weekend, and if that performance is anything to go by, Liverpool will need to buck their ideas up when they travel to Roma for this second leg.
That said, Liverpool are unbeaten in their last 15 matches overall in the Champions League and Jurgen Klopp’s men will need little motivation to put in a good shift in Italy here, knowing a place in the final awaits them if they can manage to avoid defeat in this return leg.
Away from home, Liverpool are unbeaten in their last seven which includes wins at Hoffenheim, Maribor, Porto and Manchester City, and they’re just one hurdle away from a real go at lifting the Champions League trophy.
Roma have to attack and Liverpool possess deadly attacking threats on the counter – I’ll back both teams to score and Over 2.5 goals.
