Preview: Tehelne pole, home to Slovan Bratislava, is the venue for this UEFA Champions League second qualifying round second leg. It is where Ferencvaros must find a response to last week’s shock 2-1 loss, surrendering a lead when conceding twice in the closing ten minutes.

Slovan Bratislava – Slovakians merit more respect than is being given?

Having seen their defensive resolve finally broken after 70 minutes of the first leg, some might have expected Slovan Bratislava to undertake a rise-averse approach to the closing stages. Instead they take a 2-1 lead back to Slovakia, where they are W2 D5 L1 across eight European outings (qualifying and group stage included) since the start of last season. Keeping a clean sheet in all but three of those games.

Despite those late heroics in Hungary, Belasi (Sky Blues) aren’t exactly being given a ringing endorsement by bookmakers who have the hosts down as 2/1 outsiders to win this deciding leg inside 90 minutes. That might have something to do with an uninspiring display in their last European home fixture: a goalless draw against Dinamo Batumi which preceded a 2-1 win after extra-time out in Georgia in the second leg.

Key Stat: Slovan Bratislava would go undefeated at home during last season’s 11-point romp to their fourth consecutive Slovakian league championship. They won 11 of 15 said games, all while scoring at a rate of 2.5 per game.

Ferencvaros – Hungarians with it all to do in Slovakia?

Bidding for a second UEFA Champions League appearance in the group stage in three seasons are Hungary’s most successful side, Ferencvaros. The team from Budapest were head and shoulders above their domestic peers last time round, accruing 12 points more than their nearest pursuer. Intriguingly, they would produce more away wins (12 vs 10) on their way to claiming a fourth successive league title.

This ability to perform on the road gives them a fighting chance of turning around this slender deficit in front of them. Having said all that, their record away from home on the continent suggests they could be in a spot of bother. The Green Eagles – a nickname owing to their famous green kit colour – are without an away win in six European away matches (D1 L5), drawing 0-0 in Kazakhstan versus Tobol in the round prior.

Key Stat: Ferencvaros haven’t scored in four of six previous European away games. Moreover, they managed only two attempts on target in their goalless stalemate against Kazakhstan champions Tobol in the UCL first qualifying round (won second leg 5-1 in Hungary).

Slovan Bratislava Vs Ferencvaros Betting Advice

With a lead to protect, Slovan Bratislava can afford to play this second leg slow and methodically. They didn’t incur any losses at their Tehelne pole stadium on their way to another dominant Fortuna Liga (Slovakia’s top division) title in 2021-22. Opening their accounts at home for the new season with a morale boosting 4-0 win over Trencin on Saturday. Personally, I feel they are too big to avoid defeat here.

Slovan Bratislava Vs Ferencvaros – Key Facts:

  • Across three competitive encounters, Slovan Bratislava are yet to lose to Ferencvaros (W2 D1). Their only previous meeting in Slovakia came in September 1992 and resulted in a big win (4-1) for the home side.
  • Whereas Slovan Bratislava boast a solid recent record as hosts in Europe (W2 D5 L1), Ferencvaros are out to end a six-game winless away run (D1 L5) in UEFA competitions.
  • There hasn’t been a first-half goal in any of three Slovan Bratislava European fixtures so far this season. The 0-0 half-time correct score would also deliver a winner in two of three Ferencvaros outings in Europe this term.

Ferencvaros’ desire to win means risks have to be taken. Their opponents sucker-punched them in Hungary, though, and could conceivably do so to even greater affect in Slovakia. Moreover, the Hungarians wouldn’t muster a goal in four of six previous away outings in Europe (admittedly three came in last season’s Europa League group stage). Meanwhile, Under 2.5 Goals landed in six of SB’s last eight European home fixtures.
