The New Saints face an almost impossible task of turning around this first qualifying round tie against Macedonian outfit, Shkendija, following last week’s first leg 5-0 thrashing away from home which have left the Welsh club a mountain to climb in this second leg.
Despite holding home advantage at their Park Hall Stadium on Tuesday night, the hosts have their backs to the wall for this second leg, and although they’ve played one pre-season friendly prior to this season’s Champions League campaign, they look resigned to looking ahead to their domestic season rather than progressing in this competition.
A 2-0 home win over Falkirk has been their only match preparation prior to last week’s disastrous first leg result, and having won just twice in their last ten home ties at this level with wins over B36 Torshavn and Tre Penne, they’ll have their work cut out in this one.
Onto Shkendija, and they did exactly what was expected of them in last week’s first leg of this Champions League first round qualifier, although the margin of their win was perhaps bigger than they imagined prior to kick-off!
The visitors now bring a 5-goal cushion with them to Shropshire and they’ll be confident that they can at least defend this lead, as they look forward to the next qualifying round. Shkendija’s game-plan will have been made a little simpler ahead of this second leg too, as they’ll seek to pick the Welsh club off who now have to go on the attack from the off on Tuesday night.
Even though Shkendija’s previous experience at this level is extremely limited (they’ve played just one away match prior to this so far, and that ended in a 4-0 thrashing away at the hands of Partizan), the visitors should get another result here.
