Tottenham Preview – Can Spurs see off French visitors?

Tottenham registered a 2-1 home win over London rivals, Fulham, on the weekend in the Premier League and this result not only helped lift Tottenham up into an early 3rd place position in the Premier League standings but it also extended Tottenham’s unbeaten start to this new season under Antonio Conte to six matches.

Spurs have picked up four wins during this successful opening period to this new campaign by way of victories over Southampton, Wolves, Nottingham Forest and Fulham while also picking up points in draws with London rivals, Chelsea and West Ham, both of which were away from home as well.

The bigger picture looks bright for the north London hosts ahead of this upcoming Matchday 1 clash against French counterparts, Marseille, as the hosts have lost just once in their last 16 matches across all competitions, but Champions League form has taken a dent in recent times, as the hosts have lost their last three ties on the trot.

Defeat to Bayern Munich and back to back losses home and away to RB Leipzig set Tottenham back in previous Champions League campaigns but Spurs now look a different prospect under Conte, and the home side should get off to a winning start here.

Rodrigo Bentancur and Cristian Romero returned to the first XI for Tottenham in the win over Fulham, leaving Bryan Gil and Lucas Moura as Conte’s only injury worries.

Marseille Preview – Can Marseille make it five on the trot?

French visitors, Marseille, will also be brimming with confidence ahead of this Matchday 1 clash in England’s capital as the visitors have recorded four wins on the trot in the domestic top flight and will be looking to transfer their domestic Ligue 1 form onto the European stage on Wednesday night at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Recent victories against Nantes, Nice, Clermont and Auxerre have helped thrust Marseille up into 2nd spot in the Ligue 1 standings, level on points with PSG and in early contention for a possible outside chance at securing the domestic top flight title, but there’s a long way to go and a battle on the European front to contend with as well.

On that note, Marseille have found the step up onto the Champions League stage a tough one to cope with as previous results show that the visitors have managed to claim just one win out of their last 15 ties overall, which came in the form of a 2-1 home win against Olympiakos but no fewer than 14 defeats have dwarfed Marseille’s minimal success.

In addition, Marseille have lost their last eight away ties on the trot and have conceded 2 goals or more in seven of these eight outings, so this doesn’t bode well for Wednesday evening.

The Marseille attacking duo of Cedric Bakambu and Bamba Dieng have been left out of their club’s Champions League squad after deadline day transfers collapsed, while Dimitri Payet is expected to miss out with a calf injury.
