Macedonian First League champions, Vardar, hold home advantage in this third qualifying first leg against the Danish title holders, Copenhagen, when the teams meet at the Nacionalna Arena Filip II Makedonski.
Vardar won a fifth title from the last six seasons, and their third on the trot when they sealed the league title from runners-up and bridesmaids, Shkendija, who also lost out in the Macedonian cup final to Pelister.
Vardar progressed from the second qualifying round with a surprising 4-2 aggregate win over Swedish side Malmo, and they face another Scandinavian outfit in the shape of Copenhagen in the third round. Vardar have managed just three home wins though from their 10 matches played in the Champions League to date.
Copenhagen are considered to be one of the ‘giants’ of this Champions League third round qualifying stage, and it would be a huge upset if they were to fail to progress to at least the play-off stages of this competition, considering their vast experience in european football.
Copenhagen cruised to yet another domestic title at the end of their last campaign as they became title holders some way before the regular season ended, finishing some 22 points ahead of runners-up Brondby by the end of the championship phase of the term.
The Danes made it through to this round thanks to a 4-3 aggregate win over Zilina but they were made to work for their progress, following a 2-1 defeat in the second leg in Copenhagen. Luckily for Copenhagen, they registered a useful 3-1 win away in the first leg.
While Copenhagen are expected to face another tough challenge here, I’ll give the quarter-ball here as I expect them to get a result of some sort in this first leg.
