Summerghand sets the standard in Hopeful Stakes

Horse Racing Betting

Saturday is a huge day of UK Racing and one of the top features is going to be the Newmarket 14:05 which is the Close Brothers Hopeful Stakes.

This is a Listed Class 1 fixture which is open to 3-year-olds and above over a 6f trip.

The popular SUMMERGHAND is lining up as the race favourite for this one and he is one of eleven declared for the contest.

Last year’s winner of this sprint was 6-year-old RAUCOUS from a 10/1 SP (Alistair Rawlinson / R M H Cowell) and he is back for a defence this year.

Summerghand the 5/2 favourite in Newmarket Hopeful Stakes

The popular SUMMERGHAND is going to be well supported on Saturday from a 5/2 quote* (betting odds taken from 20:56 GMT on Friday, 28th August 2020). That is after hitting the big time last time out.

He got the Stewards’ Cup under his belt at Glorious Goodwood a month ago and he just appeared to step up to a whole new level there, perhaps helped by the headgear. That’s two wins in his last three runs now.

For many, he is going to set the standard here and with the form that he carries is likely to carry a huge threat in this Listed content. It’s worth remembering that his Glorious Goodwood score did come at top weight as well, but Summerghand was well up for it.

Can Raucous land the defence?

Last year’s winner of the Hopeful Stakes, RAUCOUS is back for another crack at this. He has been away for almost a year though but has before shown that he can deliver on returns.

The Hopeful Stakes was one of two wins that Raucous took last season.

So if he one again comes back sharp and fresh, then he could be a player after last year’s effort here and the bookies are wary of him at 7/1* (betting odds taken from 20:56 GMT on Friday, 28th August 2020).

Ventura Rebel can handle the challenge against experience

We like the look of VENTURA REBEL for this contest. He put in a big appearance at Royal Ascot this season, getting a place finish in the Commonwealth Cup. That was some effort for him.

He hasn’t produced a victory this term, but he looks an exciting prospect here taking on a more experienced field.

Ventura Rebel was last seen at York and had excuses there, so there are definite place claims from him at 5/1* (betting odds taken from 20:56 GMT on Friday, 28th August 2020).

Jash can launch a challenge

There is such a good field in attendance here and JASH is another that can make an impact in his second efforts since wind surgery. He came back from a long break in July to take fourth place at Chelmsford.

It looked as if he badly needed that run as well because he never looked all that comfortable in it. But he dug in there and will be all the better for it.

Has is a former course and distance winner and has been lightly raced in the last couple of years Jash is a current 15/2 option for this field* (betting odds taken from 20:56 GMT on Friday, 28th August 2020).

Sunday Star could light up Saturday

Not to be totally counted out of the frame is SUNDAY STAR from a 9/1 quote* (betting odds taken from 20:56 GMT on Friday, 28th August 2020). It has been a solid return to action from her, having taken back to back third-place finishes.

She can take plenty of encouragement from those efforts, particularly from her finish at the York Summer Stakes over this distance. Sunday Star is also a former course and distance winner and brings some very interesting claims to the table here.

Rest of the runners

HIGHLAND DRESS gets the headgear on and looks as if he needs to find a bump in form. He has looked a bit below par on his last couple of trips and has a lot to find.

SHABAAB has also struggled to get things together on his last two trips and was really out of sorts at Newbury on his last run.

WATAN finished well down the field at the Stewards’ Cup at Glorious Goodwood last time out. He is lightly raced and before Goodwood took a great second place at Newbury after more than a year off the track.

BRAD THE BRIEF was poor in a Chester handicap last week and has seen his form start to go the wrong way for the season. There was plenty of promise from him as a juvenile, however.

BUNGEE JUMP on his day has the potential, although he hasn’t really pushed on in handicaps. In June he scored a second place in a Listed fixture at Goodwood but hasn’t been anywhere near the frame in two runs since.

BURMESE WALTZ kicked off his reappearance with a good win before going to Royal Ascot where he took second place in the Silver Wokingham. His last race was in a Listed fixture at Pontefract and he wasn’t at his best.

Predictions & Tips for Newmarket Hopeful Stakes Racing Odds

What a fixture we have on our hands here. Let’s start at the top and look at SUMMERGHAND. He has to be worth a stone look here as he has really stepped it up in some big fixtures this season.

VENTURA REBEL checks some boxes for us as well in this contest just because he went well at the Commonwealth Cup and his fifth place at York following that was easily excusable.

The other that we will look for in this field is JASH who badly needed his run at Chelmsford last month. He scored on the Rowley Course last year and if he comes back to that kind of level, he’ll have a chance.

But still, it’s a close toss-up for us between JASH and SUNDAY STAR to have the place claims to fill out our top three.
