Can Wozniacki make further progress?
Wozniacki, who failed to defend her Australian Open crown twelve months ago, had an easy time of things in her opening match in Auckland. She powered her way past Kiwi Paige Hourigan, dropping just one game along the way. Wozniaki has form at the ASB Classic, reaching last year’s final where she lost to Julia Goerges. She will have been delighted with how quickly she rattled through that opening fixture. There may be more of the same to come from her.

Wozniacki and Davis have met twice before. The first of those meeting was back in 2017 in Doha, while the most recent of them has an early clash in Beijing last year. Wozniacki won both matches without dropping a set.
Can Davis upset Wozniacki?
Lauren Davis may have some credentials in this one. The American is a former ASB Classic Champion. She showed a bit of grit in holding her nerve to win a long tie-break in the first set of her first-round match against Varvara Lepchenko. Once that was in the bag, Davis had broken the resistance of her opponent. It would be a fascinating scenario to see what happens if she could herself ahead in the match up with Wozniacki. In her successful run to the 2017 title, Davis powered her way past four top-ten seeds. In her title defence, she fell in the first round last year.
Predictions
Caroline Wozniacki could face a little banana skin of a fixture in this one. But the Dane looked well composed and assured of herself in her opening fixture, whereas Davis had to grind a bit. The question would be more about whether or not the American can get a set on the board in the match.
