Chelsea News and Form

The unlikely hero of the day for Chelsea in the Czech Republic in the first leg of this tie was defender Marcos Alonso. His late strike gave them a 1-0 victory and that pushed them onto a fourteen match undefeated streak of form in the Europa League. They need one more to equal Atletico Madrid’s record. Chelsea have posted a W10 D1 record in their last seven matches in this season’s tournament. The first leg in this tie was the first competitive match between Chelsea and Slavia Prague, and the Blues didn’t have it all their own way.

Chelsea though survived and they are unbeaten in seven now against opposition from the Czech Republic. In their three previous home games against Czech sides, Chelsea are only at W1 D2. Chelsea have conceded in just three of their eleven games this season in the competition. Chelsea will be defending their unbeaten home record in the Europa League and never before have they exited a UEFA competition after having won the first leg of a tie away from home. That has happened on eleven occasions. This is their first home game against a team from the Czech Republic since a duel with Sparta Praha in the 2013/13 Europa League round of 32.

Key-Facts – Chelsea v Slavia Prague

  • Chelsea have won ten of eleven UEL matches this season
  • The Blues are W1 D2 at home against Czech sides
  • Slavia Prague have won only 3 of their last 27 away games in Europe

Slavia Prague News and Form

Slavia Prague are in brand new territory here. This is the first season that they actually managed to get themselves past the group stage. They took a second place finish behind Zenith. Then it was a victory over Genk that they took in the round of 32 before pulling off a shock in the round of 16. There Slavia Prague won a thrilling, high-scoring duel against Sevilla by a 4-3 aggregate. Out on the road they had taken a very good 2-2 draw in Spain in that tie.

Their form on the road overall in Europe doesn’t make for the greatest of reading through for them. Their win at Genk in the round of 32 was just their third win in their last 27 away games in Europe (D10 L14). Out on their travels this season in the Europa League they have failed to score in half of their six games. Each time they failed to score, they lost. Slavia Prague have lost all six UEFA competition ties in which they were defeated at home in the first leg. They don’t have form against English sides either, winning just one of their previous ten. Slavia Prague have lost all three of their previous two-legged ties against English opposition in UEFA competition.
