Can Nadal lift the Grand Slam title once again?

Rafael Nadal had a bit of grind in his semi-final against surprise opponent Matteo Berrettini. Well, at least through the early stages as Nadal needed a tie break to get the first set of the contest under his belt. After he had managed to break the resistance of the Italian in the second set, Nadal swept his way to the match win in a more routine third set.

So it stays at just the one dropped set for Nadal at the 2019 US Open. It has been a relatively comfortable draw that Nadal has come through to make what is his fifth US Open Final appearance. He has won three of the four previous visits to the showcase match at Flushing Meadows. Nadal will know that even though he is not facing one of the other big three in the Final (Novak Djokovic or Roger Federer) he is getting the toughest game that he possibly could get.

Medvedev v Nadal Head to Head

There has been just one previous meeting between Medvedev and Nadal. That was earlier this year at the Rogers Cup. Nadal breeze to a straight-sets victory 6-3 6-0.

Can Medvedev land first Major?

There is no doubt that Medvedev is taking things to the next level in his game. No player has won more matches on the ATP during 2019 than Medvedev has done. It has been some summer on the hardcourt from the Russian without question. Since the end of July, he has played 24 matches on hard courts (winning all but two of them) and the success has not slowed. The fact that he has sustained himself over so many weeks without fatigue is pretty special. He will know that he is going to have to grind and grind big against Nadal.

Nadal is just the type of player that wears you down. It’s unlikley that Medvedev is just going to win a straight baseline slog against the defence of Nadal. He is going to have to mix it up, get to Nadal’s backhand and start charging the net a bit. He has to keep Nadal guessing. It is going to be so important for the Russian to start well and his chances may all hinge on him winning the first set which he is a quote of 11/4 to do* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on September 7th, 2019 at 10:11 pm).

Predictions

Nadal gave up a surprising number of breakpoints against Berrettini in the semi-finals and still didn’t break. Even if he had dropped the first set there you would have still put your house on him to get through. This is not an easy matchup for him, but it could have been worse, he could have been facing the experience of Djokovic or Federer. Nadal to win 3-0 set betting at 5/6* (betting odds taken from Bet365 on September 7th, 2019 at 10:11 pm). His resilience and expeirence is probably going to win out.
