Celtic’s struggles prompt speculation

This has been a disastrous season from Celtic and naturally boss Neil Lennon has come under increasing pressure.

The Bhoys are a whopping 23 points behind their rivals Rangers in the title race.

With Rangers having streaked so far ahead of them, what will Celtic’s response be?

It’s been a long time since they have been in such a position of uncertainty like this.

There is, reportedly, a review of the managerial situation happening at Parkhead.

With the new availability of Lampard, there have been links there.

So the bookmakers had to react to a flood of action on Tuesday of Lampard taking over at Celtic.

Lampard was cut into 6/1 from having been as far out as a 66/1 contender mere weeks ago* (betting odds recorded at 03:11 GMT on Wednesday, 26th January 2021 at Paddy Power).

From Celtic’s perspective, they could take inspiration from Rangers who took a chance on Stephen Gerrard and gave the young manager the time to forge success.

Our betting prediction:
Eddie Howe
7/2

Rafa Benitez still the favourite

But the odds-on favourite in the market for Next Celtic Manager is former Newcastle boss Rafa Benitez.

He is currently in at 8/15 with Paddy Power to take over there* (betting odds recorded at 03:11 GMT on Wednesday, 26th January 2021).

The Spaniard is available right now, but some reports say that he is holding out for a return to England’s Premier League.

He certainly has to be an alluring target for Celtic but there are a ton of conflicting reports over whether or not he would go there.

Could Eddie Howe steal the show?

If Celtic want to turn their direction to a good young manager, then the out-of-work Eddie Howe could offer some appeal as well.

Howe is a 7/2 option in the next Celtic manager market* (betting odds recorded at 03:11 GMT on Wednesday, 26th January 2021 at Paddy Power).

The ex Bournemouth manager could walk into the job.

Over the last week, Howe has had a lot of backing to take over at Parkhead.

But would he have the big managerial-name capture that could keep Celtic fans happy?

Also, there could be another angle here.

With Newcastle tanking so badly at the moment and boss Steve Bruce under pressure there, a potential opening at Newcastle for a Premier League return could be something that Howe has on his mind.

Howe’s more likely to snap that up than Benitez.
