Manchester City News and Form – Can Citizens beat Spurs?

There was no messing around by Manchester City in their opening game of the season. They made a trip to West Ham and produced a resounding 5-0 success. They weren’t even on their game in the first period of the fixture. Raheem Sterling was the star of the show with a hattrick and he is at 4/1 in the first goalscorer market* (Betting Odds were taken from bet365 on August 14th, 2019 at 6:12 p.m.). Once they had gotten their breakthrough there was just no let-up from them. They started to make it look all too easy.

This isn’t the easiest of games to open a home account with. However, the Citizens did take back to back wins in the league over Spurs last season. It is not as if Manchester City play with any fear of anybody anyway. The Citizens took a stunning W18 L1 record from their home campaign last term, averaging around 3 goals per game well. They shipped only twelve goals at the Etihad. Pep Guardiola’s men won their last nine home games in that previous campaign. Nine of their 14 home successes in the EPL were by a margin of at least two goals.

Spurs knocked City out of the Champions League on away goals

Spurs have lost their last three visits to the Etihad (all competitions)

Key-Facts – Manchester City v Tottenham

  • City opened with a 5-0 win at West Ham
  • The Citizens only failed to win one home game last season
  • Spurs fought from behind to beat Aston Villa in their season opener

Tottenham News and Form – Can Spurs make an early statement?

Spurs were made to work in their opening game of the season. They played host to Aston Villa and were 1-0 down within ten minutes against the newly-promoted side. Tottenham got their equaliser in the 73rd minute through summer signing Tanguy Ndombele. With five minutes on the clock, it looked as if Spurs may just have to settle for a draw. But then Harry Kane popped up with two late goals to bank maximum points for the Liliywhtes. The England striker scored twice in the final five minutes to secure a 3-1 win for Spurs.

Out on their Premier League travels last season, Spurs were W11 D0 L8. They faded badly at the end of the campaign in the Premier League, losing their last five road games on the bounce. By that point, they were deep into the Champions League and it took its toll on them. One of the five defeats at the end of the EPL season was a 1-0 loss at the Etihad against the Citizens. Spurs averaged 1.75 goals per away game during the last campaign. Harry Kane opening his scoring account so early is huge for them. Tanguy Ndombele has also looked like a brilliant addition.

Manchester City v Tottenham Predictions

Manchester city to win: we are going to lean towards a bit of mutual respect being dished out in this one. By that, we mean that the score could be low in a tough early date for both of them. City just had the edge over Spurs last season and we would expect that to continue. City to win by one goal margin.
