Manchester United v Chelsea Betting Tips – Premier League, 11th August 4.30pm

The Red Devils will be looking for a stronger season this go around. It badly fell apart for them at the end of the last campaign. Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is going to have his work cut out to prove his mettle. So too Frank Lampard, the new Chelsea boss. His cause hasn’t been helped by the transfer ban hanging over the club. A win in this tough opener though would ease some concerns. Read our predictions for Manchester United v Chelsea.

Manchester United News and Form

The Red Devils burst out of the cloud of gloom under Jose Mourinho when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took charge last season. They found their groove, started racking up the wins and things looked good. Then the bubble burst and they only won three of their final ten league games of the campaign. Solkjaer has now had a summer to shape the squad a bit to his liking, although the Red Devils haven’t been that busy in the transfer market.

They have sold Romelu Lukaku, which shows that OGS wants quick, energetic players in his attacking line-up. But will the goals come without Lukaku in the side? Really there hasn’t been much change at Old Trafford. Winger Daniel James arrived along with defenders Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire coming into their defence. It is the midfield area which they look the weakest and if Paul Pogba goes (there is still time for that to happen), Manchester United could have a problem there.

It was only a sixth-place finish that the Red Devils earned last season. They took a W10 D6 L3 record at home during that campaign. They didn’t get a win on the board in any of their final three home games and just looked turgid with players not appearing fit or clued in. The Red Devils won just one of twelve games against the other top seven finishers last season. That was part of a big problem, not being good enough against the better sides. But still, it’s a new season and they did average 1.74 goals per home game last term with 68% of fixtures at Old Trafford going over 2.5 goals.

Chelsea News and Form

Although Chelsea had their issues last season as well, it wasn’t that bad of a campaign. They finished third in the league so will be back in the Champions League, and they lifted the Europa League trophy. Not a bad season’s work by boss Maurizio Sarri who has gone to Juventus and has been replaced at the Bridge by Frank Lampard. Chelsea’s away record last season was W9 D3 L7. Like United, Chelsea couldn’t compete with the better sides, picking up a D3 L6 record in their nine games against the other top-ten finishers away from home.

Chelsea struggled for goals, scoring at an average of 1.26 per road game. In none of their final five defeats away from the Bridge in the last campaign, did Chelsea score in. So it’s club legend Frank Lampard who is in the hot seat after his one season of experience with Derby. There is the transfer ban in place, so the Blues have to work with what they have until the end of the season. Then there is the toll of the Champions League.

Of their nine away wins last season, Chelsea claimed six of them by a one-goal margin only. Six of their seven away losses were by a margin of at least two goals. They were level at the halftime break in 10 of their 19 road games. Last season they looked completely toothless in the final third of the pitch and would have been dead in the water without Eden Hazard. He’s gone and that’s another part of a very difficult puzzle that Frank Lampard has to sort out.

Manchester United v Chelsea Predictions

Man Utd to win: The draw appeals a bit for this one, but it is Manchester United who gets the nod from us. They are probably going to look to come out of the gates very quickly and they should have the pace to hurt the Blues. Manchester United to win.
