Mansfield Town News and Form

Mansfield Town were excellent at home in the regular League Two campaign this season, accumulating an impressive 47 points from 23 fixtures. Meanwhile, only Exeter City, Yeovil Town, Crewe Alexandra and Stevenage left Field Mill with all three points. That defeat to Stevenage came in their last home game, though, as the Boro left with a 2-1 win.

After drawing in South Wales, the Stags have now failed to win any of their last four. Flitcroft’s boys missed out on a place in the top three after ending their campaign with three successive defeats. On the final day, Mansfield were beaten 1-0 by MK Dons in a straight shootout for the final automatic position. Overall, the Yellows have won just three of their last 12 matches.

In the first leg, a late Padraig Amond goal recused a 1-1 draw for Newport. The Stags were on their way to a vital 1-0 away win, with Christopher Hamilton scoring early for Mansfield. Town looked destined to come out on top, but goalkeeper Conrad Logan tripped Adebayo Azeez with seven minutes left to give the hosts a penalty, which the prolific Amond dispatched after a rebound.

Despite shipping late to only draw 1-1, that was still a decent result for Mansfield, who are now the strong favourites to go through. Will the Yellows book their place in the Wembley final to play either Tranmere Rovers or Forest Green Rovers?

Newport County News and Form

Newport County did a remarkable job to reach the play-offs, winning six and drawing four of their last ten League Two matches to pip the likes of Colchester United, Exeter and Stevenage to seventh spot. After a 1-0 defeat at Northampton Town back in March, County languished in 13th, eight points adrift of the play-off places.

Mike Flynn’s side did well to get back into the first leg at Rodney Parade, especially after going a goal behind after just 12 minutes. The Exiles rallied and found an equaliser late on, leaving the second leg in Nottinghamshire well and truly in the balance.

Newport were outstanding at home this season, as Flynn’s men had the joint best home record in the fourth tier. Away from home, however, the Welsh side were pretty poor, winning just six of their 23 fixtures, losing 12 times along the way.

This will be a difficult task for Newport, but they have made a habit of defying the odds all season. Can they cause a shock at Field Mill on Sunday?

Mansfield Town v Newport County Predictions

Mansfield Town win: As I mentioned, Mansfield have been very strong at home this term, with only two teams (Bury and Newport) having a better home record in the regular season. After a strong performance at Rodney Parade, the Stags should see the job through on home soil. Have a punt on the hosts to win -1 on Sunday. Also, I fancy Mansfield to keep a clean sheet at Field Mill.
