Real Madrid’s season hit a new loss as they were dumped out of the Copa del Rey in midweek after a 2-1 home loss against Leganes. Despite having edged the first leg thanks to a late, late goal from Marco Asensio, Los Merengues could not close out the deal back at home at the Bernabeu in midweek and that has heaped more pressure on boss Zinedine Zidane.
Everything is now hinging on their progress in the UEFA Champions League to potentially keep Zidane in the job. The Copa del Rey has gone, they are trailing La Liga leaders Barcelona by a huge 19 points at the moment after some shoddy league form and there are rumours that they are ready to cut their ties with Cristiano Ronaldo, with Neymar the potential replacement in what would be a shock deal.
They don’t have an easy task ahead of them in the UEFA Champions League either having been drawn against French giants PSG in the round of sixteen and that has come about after Real Madrid failed to win their group after dropping four points in their matches with Tottenham. So it has been a huge fall in standards from Los Merengues after their Spanish top flight title last year and the retention of their UEFA Champions League title.
