Paolo Lorenzi v Kyle Edmund Preview – August 27th, 2018

Britain’s Kyle Edmund starts his US Open 2018 quest on Monday and he hasn’t quite been on top of his game. So much so that he decided to take a late entry to last weekends’ Winston-Salem Open just to get in more court time because things aren’t going that well for him. He only made it to the quarter finals there which means that he has won just three matches since losing to Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon.

Edmund had that huge breakout at the Australian Open earlier this year making the last sixteen where he lost to Marin Cilic. So he definitely has it in him on the hard court but it hasn’t been a great showing from him over the second half of the season. Edmund is at 11/4 odds to win this opening challenge* (betting odds taken on August 26th, 20187 at 7:48 pm).

Italy’s Lorenzi shouldn’t be a huge challenge for Edmund really as he has basically been knocking around the ITF and lower ranked ATP tournaments. He lost in the first round of the Australian Open and in the first round of the French Open this year. He did win his opening match of Wimbledon but that’s as far as he got. That having been said, he pulled off a shock last season in making it to the round of sixteen at the US Open where he was stopped by Kevin Anderson. That was his best ever effort at the tournament having been stopped in the round of 32 the previous year.

Prediction

Edmund, if he can get his serve going, shouldn’t have too many problems against the Italian veteran. But just because Edmund isn’t on top of his game at the moment and his defence has looked a bit shaky, we will back Lorenzi to get a set off him.
