Rotherham United v Middlesbrough Betting Tips – Championship, 5th May 12.30pm

Middlesbrough are one point behind Derby County in the race for the final play-off position in the Championship. Tony Pulis’ boys will be looking for a win when they take on Paul Warne’s Rotherham United at the New York Stadium on Sunday afternoon. Only victory will do for Boro, as Derby have a point extra and a superior goal difference. Can the away team pick up a win against the relegated Millers in South Yorkshire?

Rotherham United News and Form

Rotherham United’s one-year stay in the second tier has come to an end, as the Millers were relegated from the Championship last weekend. Warne’s side failed to hold on to a lead at West Bromwich Albion, eventually losing 2-1 at The Hawthorns. In truth, Rotherham have struggled all season, winning a measly eight of their 45 Championship matches. Still, United will rebuild in the summer and hope to make an instant return.

Rotherham won just one of their 23 away matches, but they have been pretty solid at the New York Stadium. The Millers have won seven, lost seven and drawn eight of their 22 home fixtures, scoring a decent 31 home goals along the way, which is more than the likes of Middlesbrough (23) and Bristol City (28), who are both still fighting for promotion.

The Millers have run out of steam at the end of their campaign, losing three in a row after picking up a 2-2 draw with Stoke City at the bet365 Stadium a few weeks back. Overall, the Yorkshire club did not quite have enough to compete at this level.

Middlesbrough News and Form

After Derby County could only manage a 1-1 draw at Swansea City in midweek, Middlesbrough still have an opportunity to finish in the top six. Having said that, sixth place is still well and truly in County’s hands.

Middlesbrough showed tremendous spirit after going a goal down against Reading early on last time out, with Lewis Wing and Britt Assombalonga scoring quickfire goals to turn the game around before half time. Since losing six in a row, Pulis’ troops have won four of their last five.

Boro have been relatively strong away from home this season, picking up nine wins. 34 of their 70 points have come on the road. However, the club were thumped 3-0 by Nottingham Forest at the City Ground in their last away game. Also, they have lost three of their previous four on their travels.

All Middlesbrough can do is make sure that they claim a win at the New York Stadium on Sunday. Derby may be at home, but they are coming up against a West Brom side who have already booked their place in the Championship play-offs.

Rotherham United v Middlesbrough Predictions

Middlesbrough win: Boro head to the New York Stadium as the favourites, and Pulis’ promotion-chasing side should have too much for relegated Rotherham to handle on Sunday. Although I fancy the Millers to get on the scoresheet on their own patch, I’m backing Middlesbrough to come out on top by a margin in this one. Put some money on the visitors to win -1 at 7/4.
