Ryder Cup betting is the big highlight of the week’s golf action as the USA and Europe battle it out for the famous team prize.

In this Ryder Cup betting guide for 2021, we are taking a look at the action that is to come from Whistling Straits in Wisconsin, with the course playing very long.

In 2018 Europe claimed a big win over the USA at Le Golf National. But the tournament returns to North America this year where the hosts are favourites.

When and where is the Ryder cup 2021?

Wisconsin is the venue for the Ryder Cup 2021, the tournament to be played at Whistling Straits which sits on the shore of Lake Michigan.

As per usual the Ryder Cup is hosted across three days, the 2021 start coming on Friday, September 25th.

With home advantage and having won the title the last time the Ryder Cup was played in America, the USA are 8/15 odds-on favourites in golf betting* (odds recorded at 16:20 GMT on September 21st, 2021 at Betfred).

Matches at the Ryder Cup 2021

Friday: Four Foursome matches and four Fourball matches
Saturday: Four Foursome matches and four Fourball matches
Sunday: Twelve Singles matches

That’s a total of 28 matches for Ryder Cup betting 2021 and it means that the target for the USA is 14.5 points to get the title.

As the defending champions, Europe only need to draw the overall Ryder Cup by reaching 14 points which would see them hang on to the trophy.

How the Ryder Cup is scored

A point is awarded for a match win. That could be a Singles match, a Foursome match or a Fourball match at the Ryder Cup.

If there is a tie in a match, then the participants take a share of a half-point each.

Results of the Ryder Cup since 2000

Since the start of the new century, Europe has largely been in control of the Ryder Cup contests.

Europe has won 7 of the last 9 Ryder Cup events.

The USA however, has won two for the last three on home turf, the one exception being Europe’s famous comeback at the Medinah Country Club in 2012 to win in Illinois.

Last 9 Ryder Cup Winners

  • 2002 Europe 15½–12½*
  • 2004 Europe 18½–9½
  • 2006 Europe 18½–9½*
  • 2008 USA 16½–11½*
  • 2010 Europe 14½–13½*
  • 2012 Europe 14½–13½
  • 2014 Europe 16½–11½*
  • 2016 USA 17–11*
  • 2018 Europe 17½–10½*

How Whistling Straits is likely to play

The Whistling Straits course in Wisconsin is going to play very long, which is something to note for Ryder Cup golf betting 2021.

It’s almost playing at 8,000 yards and that is potentially going to play into the hands of the Americans more so than Europe.

The USA team is stacked with big hitters including Tony Finau, Dustin Johnson, Scottie Scheffler and of course, Bryson Dechambeau.

This is the first time that Whistling Straits has hosted the Ryder Cup, but has been the venue of precious PGA Championship events.

All three of those PGA Championship tournaments at the course incidentally were won by non-Americans.

Our betting prediction:
Europe to lead after Day 1
13/8

Ryder Cup 2021 Title the USA’s to lose?

The USA has assembled a formidable team for this home Ryder Cup. There are eight of the current Top 10 players in the world in their ranks.

It’s an embarrassment of riches really, but six of those players will be making their Ryder Cup debuts.

So the USA does fall short in terms of tournament experience to the Europeans.

But still, the USA on paper at least looks to have the stronger of the two lineups.

Back in 2008 the USA fielded six rookies and stormed to a 16½-11½ victory at Valhalla.

As for a repeat scoreline for this year’s Ryder Cup betting, we are looking at USA 16-5-11.5 @ 11/1* (odds recorded at 16:20 GMT on September 21st, 2021 at Betfred)

Even though they are rookies, the American Ryder Cup players making their debuts bring so much.

There’s Collin Morikawa for example, the winner of this year’s Open along with sensation Scottie Scheffler and Xander Shauffele.

It is Patrick Cantlay who is the current 11/4 Favourite to be the Top USA Rookie in Ryder Cup betting* (odds recorded at 16:20 GMT on September 21st, 2021 at Betfred).

Top GB & Ireland Player Ryder cup Odds

Rory McIlroy 7/2
Tommy Fleetwood 5/1
Shane Lowry 6/1
Paul Casey 6/1
Tyrrell Hatton 6/1
Ian Poulter 6/1
Matt Fitzpatrick 8/1
Lee Westwood 10/1

Can Europe pull off another famous win in the USA?

The 2012 Miracle at Medinah will long live on in the memory. It was such a special occasion for the Europeans who found themselves 10-4 down at the halfway stage of the tournament.

The visitors went into the final day of action 10-6 down and things were looking hopeless for Europe at the start of play. It was basically looking like damage control.

But remarkably there was a stunning final-day surge by Europe, winning 8 1⁄2 of the 12 points up for grabs.

Europe stunningly won the match by a point, Martin Kaymer sinking the winning putt.

Can the experience of the European side pull them through?

They don’t collectively have the distance off the tee that the Americans have, so are going to have to lean towards the short game to put themselves in the picture.

There’s Ian Poulter who won all of his matches in that famous Medinah victory.

There’s Sergio Garcia who has won more points at the Ryder Cup than anyone else heading into 2021 action.

Lee Westwood is set to equal the joint record of most appearances for Europe (11) alongside Nick Faldo.

So experience and calm heads are there. But is that going to equal success? Away from home, facing a formidable USA lineup?

Europe are 12/5 in Ryder Cup betting for the victory* (odds recorded at 16:20 GMT on September 21st, 2021 at Betfred)
