When and where is the US Open 2022

We are off to Boston, Massachusetts for the 122nd edition of the US Open. The inaugural edition of the tournament was in 1895.

This year’s renewal will be hosted at The Country Club at Brookline. It will be the fourth time that the club has hosted the major.

The other times that Brookline hosted the event was in 1913, 1963 and 1988.

The 2022 US Open starts on June 16th and draws to a conclusion on the 19th.

Brookline will be playing to 7,264 yards at Par 70 and there are 156 players entered for the edition.

Qualification for the US Open

There is a whole host of qualifying criteria that players can meet to gain entry to the US Open.

That includes winners of the last ten editions of the major and all the leading ten players from the 2021 edition.

Recent winners of the PGA Championship, The Open Championship, The Players Championship and the 2021 BMW PGA Championship all can claim a spot.

Any player that earned a spot in the 2021 Tour Championship also gains entry.

That’s just the tip of the iceberg really when it comes to qualification for the US Open.

It’s all, as the majors are, designed to collect the best players in the world together to compete at the highest level possible.

Our betting prediction:
Rory McIlroy
10/1

Who is the reigning US Open Champion?

Heading to Brookline as the defending champion of the US Open is Spain’s Jon Rahm after taking victory at Torrey Pines.

He became the first Spaniard to win the US Open and it was also the big major breakthrough in Rahm’s career.

The Spaniard claimed the title by one stroke ahead of Louis Oosthuizen who had shared the lead at the start of the final round.

During the final round, it looked as if Bryson Dechambeau was going to get in it, with the American leading halfway round on Sunday.

But a poor back nine saw him finish outside of the top twenty in the end.

John Rahm is a quote of 12/1 to defend his title* (odds recorded at 22:55 GMT on June 14th, 2022 at 888Sport).

Title defences in the US Open, however, happen so very rarely and the form by Rahm in this year’s majors hasn’t been red hot.

US Open 2022 Betting Favourite

The market leader currently in US Open golf betting 2022 is Rory McIlroy who is heading to Massachusetts in top form.

2011 US Open champion McIlroy picked up a title defence at the Canadian Open in Toronto last weekend.

That was the 21st title of McIlroy’s career as he won by two strokes.

McIlroy has carded a top ten finish in each of his last three US open appearances.

This year he was a runner-up at the Masters and landed in the top ten at the PGA Championship.

Rory McIlroy has been outside the top ten once only in his last five tournaments, so his current form is very steady right now.

One criticism of his recent form is that he has tended to fade away a bit on a Sunday.

But if McIlroy strings four solid rounds together then he should be in it.

Other key contenders in US Open golf betting 2022

England’s MATTHEW FITZPATRICK is interesting for this one as he has had a very good year.

He also carded an excellent top-five finish at the PGA Championship, which could be the springboard result to better things at the top of the game.

This season he has taken nine Top 20 finishes on the PGA Tour and there is more. Fitzpatrick won the US Amateur title at this venue back in 2013.

JUSTIN THOMAS picked up the PGA Championship, the second major title of his career. That will have taken some pressure off of him.

Thomas has yet to put together four good rounds in one edition of the US Open.

He comes into contention after a third-place finish at the RBC Canadian Open and was eighth in the 2020 US Open.

Last 10 US Open Winners

Year Winner Winning Margin Runner Up
2021 John Rahm 1 stroke Louis Oosthuizen
2020 Bryson DeChambeau 6 strokes Matthew Wolff
2019 Gary Woodland 3 strokes Brooks Koepka
2018 Brookes Koepka (2) 1 stroke Tommy Fleetwood
2017 Brooks Koepka 4 strokes Hideki Matsuyama, Brain Harman
2016 Dustin Johnson 3 strokes Jim Furyk, Shane Lowry, Scott Piercy
2015 Jordan Spieth 1 stroke Dustin Johnson, Louis Oosthuizen
2014 Martin Kaymer 8 strokes Erik Compton, Rickie Fowler
2013 Justin Rose 2 strokes  Jason Day, Phil Mickelson
2012 Webb Simpson 1 stroke Graeme McDowell, Michael Thompson

2015 US Open champion JORDAN SPIETH had a poor Masters earlier this year, but that sprung him into life as he followed up with some cracking form.

Spieth misfired at the PGA Championship, having gone there in some form. A couple of efforts since see him steadily back on the up.

Spieth’s record at the US Open besides his title hasn’t seen him crack the top fifteen in any other appearance.

SCOTTIE SCHEFFLER was all the rage at the start of the year, but naturally he was never going to keep his hot hand going.

His four titles in six starts at earlier this year included him landing the Masters. Scheffler hasn’t been winning titles recently, but his form is still pretty solid.

More to contenders in US Open golf betting 2022

TONY FINAU is not always the easiest player to catch right, but he enters the fray at Brookline after a second at the RBC Canadian Open.

That’s three top-ten finishes in his last five starts, so could be building towards something.

HIDEKI MATSUYAMA is one of the most consistent players around and he won two titles in 2022.

The Japanese golfer comes in fresh after not having played since the PGA Championship.

BROOKS KOEPKA has a tremendous record at the US Open, with two victories in his last four appearances.

Those victories were in 2017 and 2018. He only missed out on a hat-trick after finishing runner-up in 2019.

After not playing in 2020 because of injury, Koepka returned to the US Open last year and finished fourth. Remarkable stuff.

The final selection to consider for the golf betting action in the US Open 2022 is SHANE LOWRY who has had a cracking 2020.

A third at this year’s Masters and nine top twenty finishes from twelve stroke-play tournaments this year says it all.

His record at the US Open is nothing to write home about, but he looks confident and in form.

US Open Golf Betting – Some trends

There are always trends for US Open golf betting to size up and here is a look at some of those.

It’s worth applying some to the market to help try and slice through the crowd.

  • Age – The recent age trends have leaned towards younger plates. Seven of the last ten US Open editions have been won by a player in their 20s. The average win rate of US Open champions in the last decade is about 28.
  • World Ranking – The last ten editions of the US Open have been won by a player that has been inside the world’s top 30 at the time.
  • Nationality – There have only been three non-Americans to win the US Open in the last ten editions. Home players do tend to have an advantage in this one.
  • Previous US Open form – it seems to help having had a nice touch of US Open form before. The last ten winners of the major had all recorded a top twenty-five finish at the event.
  • Current form in the Majors – bringing some warm form from the most recent majors appearances into the US Open seems to be a factor. All but two of the last 10 winners had carded a top ten finish in at least one of their two most recent major tournaments.
  • Season form – Naturally any player that started the year hot but has gone cold isn’t going to have as much appeal as one going the other direction. Consider players who have muscled their way into the top fifteen in one of their two previous events played. 7 of the last 10 US Open winners have done that.

What’s happening with the LIV players?

It has been hard to ignore the LIV Golf Tour which recently held its inaugural event. The USGA has confirmed that any players who played on the LIV Golf Tour will remain eligible to participate in the US Open.

Among the benefactors, there are Dustin Johnson, Louis Oosthuizen, Sergio Garica and Phil Mickelson, all of which are at Brookline this week.

Mickelson incidentally needs the US Open to complete a career slam having finished runner-up six times before the US Open.

Nothing to do with the LIV Golf Tour, one big name that is not attending is Tiger Woods, who is not playing because he needs more recovery time from injury.
