Southampton News and Form – Can the Saints beat Spurs?

The Saints played out a point at home against Crystal Palace on the weekend. That’s seven points from their last three games. So they are easing themselves steadily away from the drop zone which is the most important thing for them at the moment. The home record of Southampton is only W2 D2 L6 this season. Those two wins have appeared in their last four at St Mary’s. So there has been improvement recently. It is worth putting into context that their two home wins have been against the bottom two of Watford and Norwich. But they are facing a suspect Tottenham defence here.

Southampton one goal winning margin
4/1

William Hill

Southampton have scored an average of a goal per home game, but have conceded to an average of 2.5 goals per home fixtures. Danny Ings has netted three goals in his last three games for the Saints and has netted in four of Southampton’s last five home games. 70% of games at St Mary’s this season have gone over 2.5 goals and Southampton are still looking for their first home clean sheet. Seven of the ten goals that the Saints have netted at home this season have been in the second half of games. Just once on home soil have they opened the scoring this season.

Tottenham News and Form – Can Spurs win at Southampton?

The defence of Tottenham is looking highly suspect lately. Twice Tottenahm had to fight back from behind to get a draw at bottom side Norwich on Saturday. That was after having had to come from behind to beat Brighton on Boxing Day. Spurs have now conceded the opening goal in each of their last three league games (W1 D1 L1). So they aren’t quite at the races and have secured just once clean sheet since a home win over Crystal Palace back in the middle of September. Looking at their away form, it has not been a great campaign for the Liliyhwites who are only W2 D4 L4 on their travels.

Spurs have conceded at an average of 1.9 goals per away game this season, without having banked a clean sheet. They have scored an average of 1.5 goals per road game. They have only lost one of their last five on the road, which is a positive (W2 D2) and has shown some improvement. The two away wins that they have secured have both been by one goal margin only. Three of their four away losses have been by a one goal margin. Each of Tottneham’s last four away games have gone over 2.5 goals.

Southampton vs Tottenham Predictions

Southampton to win: The Saints may be worth a flutter here. They look as if they have turned the corner a bit. Tottenham aren’t playing great at the moment and just about avoided embarrassment at Norwich on the weekend. Home win.
