Although they have largely been ignored, Switzerland have the look of being able to produce an exciting campaign at the 2014 World Cup. They are a young side, and coach Ottmar Hitzfeld looks to be on to a good thing at the moment. Ecuador will consider themselves to be fully in the race though to qualify from Group E.

Switzerland qualified for the World Cup without losing a game, winning seven and drawing three. They have built their recent success on the back of a lot of high quality youth, like Bayern Munich’s Xherdan Shaqiri and promising young forwards Haris Seferovic and Josip Drmic. None of their strikers at the World Cup are over 24 and they only have three players 30 or over in their World Cup squad. So they have a lot of running in them you would think and they have worked hard to shed that label of being a dull, defense-first type of side. They are a long way from that at the moment.
Switzerland have conceded just one goal in their last seven matches at the World Cup, and with the Swiss having posted three clean sheets in their six matches as well, then it may be worth looking at Switzerland to win to nil at a price of 3/1, in what will be their first ever international match up against Ecuador. Josip Drmic looks a promising option for them at 5/2 in the anytime goalscorer market, having scored three goals in Switzerland’s last three matches. While their forwards haven’t got a lot of experience nor goals behind them, they are maturing into a very good side and will fancy their chances of qualifying from the group.
Ecuador will be looking towards Felipe Caicedo who scored seven goals in nine qualification matches for Ecuador. It is a little tough to get a good read on Ecuador. They had more shots than any other side in CONMEBOL qualification, but were the lowest scoring of the five sides to qualify. They did come through with the second best defensive record though, but they haven’t kept a clean sheet in their last five matches played. They have only lost one of their last six too, so perhaps will be resilient and it may take some work for Switzerland to open them up. Probably worth going under 2.5 goals because of that.

Would roll with Switzerland on this one. It is likely to be a low scoring affair, but the young Switzerland side look to have better momentum and more going for them. They are a good, neat and open side, but would not expect a high return of goals, because it will be about how long it takes the Swiss to break Ecuador down most likely. Look for under 2.5 goals or push for Switzerland to win for the outright value.
