Wigan Athletic v Leeds United
Betting Tips – EFL Championship, 17th August 15.00pm

Paul Cook’s Wigan Athletic will be hoping to return to winning ways after a heavy defeat in their last EFL Championship outing. This Saturday, the Latics entertain Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United, who dropped two points at home to Nottingham Forest last weekend. These two sides played out two fascinating Championship fixtures last season, and we should be in for a cracking matchup at the DW Stadium on Saturday. Can Wigan secure a surprise win, or will United make it seven points from a possible nine with victory in Greater Manchester?

Wigan Athletic News and Form – Can the Latics respond from last weekend’s poor defeat?

Wigan Athletic started their season with a good 3-2 win over Cardiff City, who have just dropped out of the Premier League. The Bluebirds went in front after 20 minutes at the DW Stadium, but second-half goals from Michael Jacobs and Josh Windass turned the game on its head. Omar Bogle levelled, though Lee Evans had the last laugh with 15 minutes to go, firing in the winner from outside the box.

Unfortunately for Wigan, they were brought back down to earth with a bang in their last league outing, crashing to a heavy defeat at Preston North End. The Latics were woeful at Deepdale, with Sean Maguire, Louis Moult and Paul Gallagher scoring in a 3-0 win for Alex Neil’s men. Wigan then followed that up with a 1-0 defeat at Stoke City in the EFL Cup in midweek.

Wigan were very solid at the DW Stadium last term. Paul Cook’s men, who were promoted from EFL League One back in the 2017-18 season, won 11 of 23 home games. Meanwhile, only Leeds, Derby County, Birmingham City and Sheffield Wednesday won at the DW in last season’s Championship.

Since beating Cardiff, Wigan have suffered back-to-back league and cup away defeats. However, the Latics are not easy to beat at home, and they will be hoping to give the Championship title favourites a run for their money at the DW at the weekend.

Leeds United News and Form – Whites to take the points at the DW?

Leeds United have started their league season with a win and a draw. The Whites began with a comfortable 3-1 win over Bristol City at Ashton Gate. Pablo Hernandez, Patrick Bamford and Jack Harrison were on the scoresheet in that one.

United failed to follow that up with another victory last weekend, though. Leeds led against Nottingham Forest, with Pablo Hernandez opening the scoring at Elland Road. However, with time running out, Lewis Grabban bundled the ball over the line to give Sabri Lamouchi’s men a deserved point.

Nevertheless, Leeds got back to winning ways in the EFL Cup against EFL League Two side Salford City in midweek. Eddie Nketiah scored on his United debut to give the Whites the lead two minutes before the break. Second-half strikes by Gaetano Berardi and Mat Klich sealed a 3-0 win at Moor Lane.

Leeds had one of the best away records in the Championship last term, accumulating 37 points from a possible 69. After winning away from home on the opening weekend of this season, Bielsa’s boys will be on the lookout for another three points on the road this Saturday.

Wigan Athletic v Leeds United Predictions

Leeds United win: After dropping points in their last Championship outing, Leeds will want to hit back in this one. Bielsa’s men, who are currently priced at just 3/1 to win the title, should see off Wigan at the DW Stadium. Check out the very tempting price of 21/10 for United to win -1. Leeds have yet to keep a clean sheet in the league this season, so Bielsa will want his troops to keep the home team at bay in this one. You can get the visitors to win to nil at 11/5.
