Wigan Athletic News and Form – Latics going for a fourth home win on the spin

Paul Cook’s Wigan Athletic have been excellent at home in recent weeks. Since being held to a 0-0 draw by lowly Barnsley, the Latics have won three in a row at the DW Stadium, beating Charlton Athletic (2-0), Birmingham City and Nottingham Forest (both 1-0).

Last time out in the Championship, Wigan were involved in a thrilling 2-2 draw with in-form Bristol City at Ashton Gate. Athletic fell behind but Cheyenne Dunkley scored a brace to turn the game on its head. Unfortunately for Wigan, Pedro Pereira netted for the hosts with four minutes to go to stop Cook’s troops from picking up their first away win of the campaign.

 

 

As I mentioned, Wigan have been very strong on their own patch this season, with Leeds United being the only team to have left the DW with maximum points. Can they seal a fourth home league victory in a row this weekend?

Swansea City took the South Wales bragging rights last weekend, beating Neil Warnock’s Cardiff City at the Liberty Stadium. Ben Wilmot’s first-half header was enough to give the Swans a deserved 1-0 win over the Bluebirds.

Away from the Liberty, Steve Cooper’s men have one of the best away records in the second tier. In fact, only Leeds and West Bromwich Albion have picked up more away points so far. The Welsh outfit have won three and drawn three of six on the road in the Championship.

Despite their excellent away form, Swansea have won just one of their last four on their travels across all competitions. Can City follow up last weekend’s derby win with victory at the DW at the weekend?

Swansea City win: Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds, who won 2-0 at the DW back in August, remain the only team to have gotten the better of Wigan on their own patch in the Championship this season. Last term, Wigan’s solid home form kept them in the division, as 41 of their 52 points were won at home.

Swansea have made a good start to life under Cooper, with last weekend’s win over Cardiff a high point in their season. The Swans have been formidable away from home in the second tier thus far, and I fancy them to leave Greater Manchester with all three points on Saturday. Back the away victory at 6/4.

Swansea have won three away games in the Championship this term, scoring the opening goal in two of those. Cooper’s troops are priced at 4/5 to net first in this one.
