1000 Guineas Racing Preview for Sunday

Horse Racing Betting

1000 Guineas Odds: The 2021 Guineas Festival this weekend kicks off the new flat season of British racing. The big feature of Sunday is the 1000 Guineas.

This is one of the great Classics of British racing and it’s a fine way to start the new season.

This is our 1000 Guineas Odds 2021 guide. In it we look over some of the history of the great race, along with trends and the latest odds.

We also cast a diligent eye over the main runners in the field. From that, we make our tips for the 1000 Guineas odds 2021.

Where is the Guineas Festival?

This two-day Festival is held at Newmarket in Suffolk. The action takes place on the famous Rowley Mile turf.

The 2021 Guineas Festival will play out on the weekend of May 1st – 2nd.

What are the Classics?

In-play at the Festival, this weekend will be two of the five British Classics of horse racing. These are some of the most prestigious fixtures in flat racing.

2000 Guineas – 1 mile, Open to three year old thoroughbred colts and fillies
1000 Guineas – 1 mile, Open to 3 year old Fillies Only
Epsom Oaks 1m 4f, Open to 3 year old Fillies Only
Epsom Derby 1m 4f Open to three year old thoroughbred colts and fillies
St Leger Stakes 1m 6f, Open to three year old thoroughbred colts and fillies

The famous Triple Crown in the Classic is referred to as winning the 2,000 Guineas, The Derby and the St Leger Stakes.

The Fillies Triple Crown refers to winning the 1000 Guineas, the Oaks and the St Leger.

What is the 1000 Guineas?

This is one of the British Classics for the Fillies only. This is one of the top flat races in British Racing and is a Group 1.

It is a flat race and it is the second of the five Classics that is run. Historically it has been run the day after the 2000 Guineas.

The first-ever 1000 Guineas was run in 1814 and it really didn’t take long for it to become established as one of the most prestigious fixtures on the calendar.

Because the 1000 Guineas is only open to 3-year-olds, the horses only get one shot at winning the famous race.

The only other Classic that is restricted to Fillies is the Epsom Oaks.

Leading Trainers

The trend has most certainly been with A P O’Brien who is the leading trainer of the 1000 Guineas in the last decade. That’s six of the last ten winners that have come from him, a simply brilliant strike race.

From the other side of the coin, John Gosden has had 17 winless runners in the 1000 Guineas, topped by Mick Channon who has had 19 entrants without a single success.

Leading Jockeys

Thanks to a thriving partnership with Aiden O’Brien, jockey Ryan Moore has won four of the last ten renewals of the 1000 Guineas.

That’s more than any other jockey has managed in the last 20 years of the famous race. The only other multiple winning jockeys in that span have been Frankie Dettori and Wayne Lordan who have both won twice.

The biggest 1000 Guineas Trends

  • The race favourite has finished in the top three in each of the last six editions, but only one of them won.
  • All but one of the last 20 winners have been at an SP of no bigger than 25/1
  • 19 of the last 20 1000 Guineas winners had placed in a Class 1 race
  • All but two of the last 20 winners had at least three previous starts on the turf
  • Only one of the last 20 winners of the Classic had been bigger than 10/1 last time out
  • There has been four FAV winners in the last 20 editions of the 1000 Guineas

Santa Barbara the strong 7/4 FAV in 1000 Guineas Odds

The clear favourite for 1000 Guineas Betting is SANTA BARBARA at 7/4* (odds recorded at 20:18 GMT on April 30th, 2021 at Ladbrokes).

She will be jumping into just her second racetrack appearance here after a very good debut last autumn.

That happened at the Curragh with a win in a big field. Her yard has won four of the last five editions of the 1000 Guineas, so you can expect a strong challenge.

But at such a short price for only her second run, taking into account inexperience is it worth taking her on in 1000 Guineas betting?

Mother Earth
5/2

Sacred in with a chance

SACRED picked up a win in the Nell Gwyn. So she brings a big threat to the table. Sacred is a quote of 13/2 in 1000 Guineas odds* (odds recorded at 20:18 GMT on April 30th, 2021 at Ladbrokes).

The nice thing about Sacred is that she is a match fit, having gotten that Group 3 win here at Newmarket in the Nell Gwyn on her reappearance.

The 1m trip does cast a little doubt over her. But looking back to her juvenile season there were plenty of positives to build from.

Sacred finished in second place in the Queen Mary, Weather and Flying Childers in the previous campaign. She very reasonably can be considered to get herself in the frame.

Will the experienced Mother Earth show?

MOTHER EARTH had a busy juvenile campaign and will benefit from the experience of Franke Dettori being booked for the ride.

She was very good in the autumn when she earned a place finish in the Fillies’ Mile and at the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf.

Mother Earth, therefore, has been kicking around very good company and holding her own. She claimed a win at Naas in a Group 3 trip last summer.

She is entitled to come on for her reappearance run because the profile fits very well for her making her presence felt in the 1000 Guineas.

Mother Earth is a quote of 15/2* (odds recorded at 20:18 GMT on April 30th, 2021 at Ladbrokes).

Can Alcohol Free fit the 1m trip?

There has been very promising form as well from ALCOHOL FREE who looks positive enough to get her nose into this fixture.

Last September she took a course win in the Cheveley Park at the 6f distance. She really didn’t have to improve too much to score again on her reappearance.

That was at Newbury in the Fred Darling at the 7f trip, getting that Group 3 success by a short head.

The positive from that for Alcohol Free was that she showed plenty of grit and spirit to hang in there and grind the success.

But that race did highlight concerns that the 1m trip may not totally be within her range, especially not in a competitive fixture like this.

More to come from Statement

STATEMENT may be able to, well, make a statement in this fixture and she is entitled to improve having had her reappearance run.

Last autumn she got off the mark at the third time of asking on a muddy trip at Newbury in a maiden.

Statement’s reappearance for this season saw her take on the Fred Darling, where she was beaten by a short head by Alcohol Free.

Interestingly she looks the better of the two to make the step up to the 1m trip. So, we do think that Statement has a very good chance of overturning that particular rival.

But can she do enough from 8/1 to topple the entire field in 1000 Guineas Odds* (odds recorded at 20:18 GMT on April 30th, 2021 at Ladbrokes).

Others to note

SAFFRON BEACH picked up back to back wins in her juvenile campaign and put in a decent effort on her first go as a three-year-old too.

Saffron Beach was in the Nell Gwyn for that appearance when she found only Sacred too good on the day. She could easily be a player at the 1m trip.

FEV ROVER earned a listed and a French Group 2 win at a 7f trip last summer. Her final start didn’t see her to the best effect, but that could have been down to the conditions. The cheekpieces go on for the first time.

THUNDER BEAUTY opened her account with a debut win at the Curragh last summer. On her follow up she was sent to Group 1 action and put in a valiant effort to take fifth place in the fixture. Her final start as a juvenile didn’t go her way but remains an interesting inclusion.

Predictions & Tips for 1000 Guineas Odds 2021

Our first selection for 1000 Guineas Odds is SACRED who delivered the win in that Nell Gwyn. She has plenty of competitive experience behind her, which we like.

Sacred is a 6/1 option for 1000 Guineas betting* (odds recorded at 20:18 GMT on April 30th, 2021 at Ladbrokes).

That good win for her on her reappearance, came after she didn’t even get the clearest of runs on the day here at Newmarket. Sacred should be a big player.

We like the experience of MOTHER EARTH who has to get herself right in the frame because of strong experience.

She was performing at the highest levels last autumn as well and there is a lot to like about her as a 15/2 pick* (odds recorded at 20:18 GMT on April 30th, 2021 at Ladbrokes).

Our final pick for the 1000 Guineas will be STATEMENT at 8/1* (odds recorded at 20:18 GMT on April 30th, 2021 at Ladbrokes).

She didn’t get the better of Alcohol Free in the Fred Darling on her appearance but she looks like being better able to handle the move to 1m.
