Laafy the 5/2 FAV in Summer Handicap Odds
Heading up the market for race 2 of Saturday’s Glorious Goodwood Festival is LAAFY at 5/2* (betting odds taken from Coral at 05:09 on Friday 31st July 2020).
He should have no problem at this 1m 6f trip at all and his form has been superb since returning to action.
Laafy stepped back on the track to score a 12f handicap at Newmarket in June and really took a step forward when he went in the Old Newton Cup.
Laafy impressed there, for trainer Sir Michael Stoute, by claiming second in the Haydock contest behind Deja. He brings some leading claims to the table.
Calling The Wind seeking a double
CALLING THE WIND has returned to action with a new lease of life. He has been in peak career form, winning two of his last four efforts.
In January he got first on reappearance at Southwell and then defied odds of 40/1 in a handicap at Royal Ascot. Calling The Wind looks to be in tip-top shape right now for Richard Hughes.

Themaxwecan can show on the trip
Going for last year’s winning yard is THEMAXWECAN at 8/1* (betting odds taken from Coral at 05:09 on Friday 31st July 2020). He could be quite the player in this one as well after coming on nicely last season.
Themaxwecan has had a couple of solid runs under his belt since coming back to action, notably battling it out for a fourth place finish in the Copper Horse at Royal Ascot.
He was at the back of the pack on his last trip however.
But that was at Newbury in a race in which never looked to suit him. But without question he has the trip in him having won twice at 16f.
Can Shailene make an impact?
SHAILENE returned to action in a Group 3 contest at Haydock. She did have a difficult time in her following two races at Ascot and Newbury.
The Copper Horse was too hot for her at Royal Ascot and then with Ryan Moore in the saddle took an excusable 6th of 10 in the Aphrodite Fillies’ Stakes.

Platitude can please supporters
Another that could find himself on plenty of people’s shortlist, is PLATITUDE who is a 7/1 shot* (betting odds taken from Coral at 05:09 on Friday 31st July 2020).
All three of his trips this season have been over the 14f distance, so he is a fit because of that. He wasn’t disgraced in any of those either, looking solid and competitive and the 7 year old took second on his last run at Sandown at this distance.

INDIANAPOLIS probably has something to offer in terms of place claims in this contest. He had a big return to form at Ripon in his last race 8 days ago. This is a tougher contest though and an extra in trip.
MORDRED is interesting, although it is detachable as to whether or not he has the trip in him. But after scoring on his return to action at Lingfield in June has subsequently taken three second-place finishes.
Going for last year’s winning yard is HOCHFELD. There have been big struggles for him this year, but he showed a little more of a spark by taking fourth on his last effort Sandown. Hochfeld hasn’t won for three years however.
KING’S ADVICE, a former course and distance winner, was last year’s winner. Last year he won 8 of his first 9 starts for his yard, but has not been anywhere near that kind of form. The defence looks doubtful.
QULOOB rounds out the racing preview here. He is lightly raced and was in hurdles action at the back end of last year. He got some cobwebs out with a flat run at Ascot in June. An unlikely contender.
Predictions & Tips for Goodwood Summer Handicap Odds
The form of LAAFY in the Old Newton Cup clearly makes him one of the leading contenders to score at Goodwood on the weekend. He has looked in superb nick since his gelding operation.
We like the positives that SHAILENE could bring to the table, if those last two efforts of hers can be excused, which they probably should be.
Because of easily handling the distance here we have to go towards THEMAXWECAN as well. There surely has to be more on offer from him than what happened to him at Newbury last time out. He’s worth revisiting.
