Caspian Queen to rule Newmarket field?
Heading up this particular market is CASPIAN QUEEN at 7/2* (betting odds taken from William Hill at 18:54 GMT on Thursday, 25th June 2020).
She has been going well, even in defeat. It has been back to back runners-up places from her as she looks to find a score on Friday.
Her latest race was at Goodwood on a 5f trip and Caspian Queen came close to a win even though she didn’t run all that well. She’ll probably be just a tad more comfortable going back up the extra furlong.
She’s taking on some experienced runners in this one.
But still she is bringing big claims, with amateur jockey Angus Villiers in the saddle. She is knocking on the door, top form should get her close.
WEDDING DATE
WEDDING DATE scored a couple of wins last summer and showed some really good form to take the runner up spot at Windsor last week. That was a 6f effort in which she came close.
But it was a very strong run nonetheless which means that she has to be respected for this effort.
She is down 3lb from that contest as well which is going to play into her and has to be kept on side at 6/1* (betting odds taken from William Hill at 18:54 GMT on Thursday, 25th June 2020).
SECOND COLLECTION
Taking a drop in class for this contest is SECOND COLLECTION. That means she will have solid claims as well. She was third in her last effort which was in a 6f Kempton effort.
Last summer she was in great form winning a couple of handicap efforts at a higher class than this is. That recent run at Kempton was after a three-month break too, and she should be even better.
She is worth keeping a market eye, particularly from a good current 11/1 e/w option* (betting odds taken from William Hill at 18:54 GMT on Thursday, 25th June 2020).
DONNYBROOK
The unexposed DONNYBROOK was impressive last time out. She scored a second place-finisher at Leicester which offered great potential for more to come. This will be her handicap debut.
She broke her maiden at the second attempt and that recent Leicester trip puts her in good stead. She was only beaten narrowly in that novice affair as well and it was after a 243 day break. She’s easily shortlisted.
LETHAL ANGEL
After scoring a couple of times last Autumn, LETHAL ANGEL could pique some interest. The question mark will be over a lack of recent runs however. This is not an easy race to return to action in.
But she signed with a success at Wolverhampton on her last start after scoring in a 6f effort in Brighton a month earlier.
Others are likely to be stripping fitter, but place claims for her may be there at 17/2* (betting odds taken from William Hill at 18:54 GMT on Thursday, 25th June 2020).
Others to note
We are going to look at a couple of youngsters to round out this review. The first of those is AHORSECALLEDWANDA who has been off the track for about four months.
But she broke her maiden at the second attempt at Linfield and then under penalty took a good second place back at the same venue on her last run which was in February.
Another unexposed contender is PORTUGUESEPRINCESS, who also broke her maiden at the second attempt. She was in action just over two weeks ago in a narrow loss at Chelmsford. She makes her debut on turf and in handicapping.
Predictions & Tips
There’s a good field here and this could be a very warm race. There are good unexposed interesting options in the field, as well as older horses who could easily get into their stride and contention.
A recent impressive run from WEDDING DATE just swings out fancy towards her. She has won one of her two previous visits to Newmarket as well. At a lower weight than her last trip, she has to get close.
We do expect a big challenge from CASPIAN QUEEN who looks to be a superb youngster and has been knocking on the door of success again. But this is a tough contest.
There is likely going to be not too much wrong with a look at the longer-odds on SECOND COLLECTION either. She’s coming down in grade and may well handle herself good enough to make a run at the money spots.
