Ascot Gold Cup Stakes History

The first running of the Ascot Gold Cup was in 1807 when it was open to horses 3 years old and above.

A famous moment in the history of the Ascot Gold Cup happened in 1907 when the trophy was stolen. It was never recovered either.

The winning owner of the Ascot Gold Cup gets to keep the famous trophy.

The Ascot Gold Cup is part of the Stayers’ Triple Crown in British racing, as it is the first leg which is then followed by the Goodwood Cup and the Doncaster Cup.

Stradivarius landed the Stayers Triple Crown in 2019.

Kyprios 7/4 FAV in Ascot Gold Cup Racing Odds

KYPRIOS is the current 7/4 favourite in Ascot Gold Cup betting for Thursday* (odds recorded at 18:54 GMT on March 14th, 2022 at William Hill).

Given the level of opposition that he will be facing on Thursday then that says a lot about Aiden O’Brien’s charge.

But why is Kyprios trading so strongly?

Well, the 4-year-old has made some rapid progress and he sits on a hattrick.

His latest run was the Group 3 Levmoss at Leopardstown last month.

Kyprios destroyed that field by 14 lengths.

So he clearly has more about him and the victory moved him on to four wins in six appearances.

Kyprios is emerging as something very special and he comes from a yard with a great track record in this as well.

The other big asset is the breaking for Kyprios, as it hints that he is going to comfortably stay this longer distance.

Will it all come together for the 7/4 favourite in Ascot Gold Cup odds* (odds recorded at 18:54 GMT on March 14th, 2022 at William Hill)?

Ascot Gold Cup Betting Contenders

Alongside the favourite KYPRIOS who are the other leading contenders in Ascot Gold Cup betting odds 2022?

We mentioned some of them at the top of this preview, but let us dig a little deeper.

STRADIVARIUS is back for another crack at the Gold Cup. He is a three-time winner of this contest and is back for more.

His bid last year came up short as he found Subjectivist too good on the day.

The rest of the season didn’t pan out for the great one either.

He was also defeated by Trueshan in both the Group 1 Qatar Prix du Cadran and the Long Distance Cup at the end of the season.

Is it too early to write him off? Myabe not.

Stradivarius reappeared this season in the Yorkshire Cup Stakes (Group 2) and won by a length.

He has long been one of the greatest stayers in this division and the 8-year-old still rates as a big danger.

TRUESHAN makes up the power trio for the Ascot Cup tips for Royal Ascot 2022. He is bidding for a five-timer.

He really rose to the top of this division last year, as he took the Goodwood Cup, the Cadran and the Long Distance Cup.

As mentioned above, Trueshan had the firm beating of Stradivarius last season.

Trueshan made a successful reappearance with a win at Nottingham.

Trainer Alan King does seem to be in the mindset that the ground is going to be too firm for Tuesday however, and could pull him from the race.

More class on offer in the Ascot Gold Cup

We aren’t quite done with the challengers yet in the Ascot Gold Cup Tips 20222 because we can go a bit deeper.

Especially with the potential of Trueshan not running on Thursday.

PRINCESS ZOE is well worth a look as she bagged herself the Sagaro Stakes at this course on her latest run, which was back in April.

That was a 2m trip and looks as if she has the engine to go further. Princess Zoe is no mug, as she was runner-up in this twelve months ago and is a former Cadran winner.

TASHKHAN also has some reasonable enough claims in this one because the distance should be right in his wheelhouse.

He came on very strongly last year for this yard and could still have more to come.

Tashkhan went up against Trueshan and Stradivarius in the Long Distance Cup in November here at Ascot and took the runner-up spot behind the former.

Tashkahn did lose to Stradivarius in the Yorkshire Cup, but this extra distance could see him thrive.

Ascot Gold Cup Favourites – Royal Ascot Betting

There has been a trend towards successful favourites in the last decade of Ascot Gold Cup action.

Six of the last ten renewals of the Group 1 race have been won by the favourite on the day.

Stradivarius accounts for three of those.

Last year’s winner Subjectivist outran his odds of 13/2 to land the score, springing a surprise from a low draw (4).

The longest-priced winner in the last 10 renewals of the Ascot Gold Cup, was Trip To Paris who got home first from a 12/1 SP in 2015.

In the last twenty renewals of this famous race, there has only been six favourites (including joint-favourites) to have finished outside of the top three.

Ascot Gold Cup Trends

Now it is time to dig a little further in Ascot Gold Cup trends ahead of the 2022 edition for Royal Ascot.

Across the last 20 renewals, there have been 11 wins for British trainers, 8 for the Irish and one from France. The last five editions have been won by a British trainer.

18 of the last 20 renewals of the Ascot Gold Cup have been won by a horse between 4 and 6 years old inclusive.

Ascot Gold Cup Trends Royal Ascot

  • None of the last 20 winners were more than 20/1
  • Each of the last 20 renewals were won by a horse in the top 9 of the market
  • All but of the last 20 winners had had at least four previous wins
  • A previous win of at least a 1m 6f had been taken by 19 of the last 20 winners
  • 18 of the last 20 winners had not been more than 6/1 last time out
  • At least a Group 3 win had been secured by all but of the last 20 winners
  • The last win had not been at bigger than 10/1 for any of the last 20 winners

Ascot Gold Cup Trainer & Jockey Trends

Now it is time to dig into the Ascot Gold Cup trainer and jockey trends for the latest racing tips in this race.

Aiden O’Brien has won seven of the last twenty editions of the Gold Cup. No other trainer with an entry in this year’s renewal has recorded a previous win.

O’Brien’s victories came with Yeats who completed a four-timer from 2006 through to 2009, Fame And Glory in 2011, Leading Light in 2014 and Order Of St George in 2016.

What about Stradivarius’s trainer?

Well, his victories were all for John Gosden as the single listed trainer. Technically he is with the same trainer, but the J & T Gosden yard is the new set-up. So technically it’s a different yard, which skews the numbers a bit.

Anyway, onto the jockey stats for Ascot Gold Cup tips. Partly thanks to his partnership with Stradivarius, Frankie Dettori is the leading jockey across the last 20 renewals.

He’s won five times from eighteen entries in what period.

The only other active jockey in this year’s field to have previously won the race is Ryan Moore. Moore has ridden two winners.

Ascot Gold Cup Tips & Predictions Royal Ascot 2022

Here we are then, the time for making some Ascot Gold Cup Tips. The temptation is to roll with KYPRIOS.

He is the new kid on the block, but trainer Aiden O’Brien has won this seven times before, so the youngster is in very good hands.

The marathon trip should be within his range and he has produced some impressive stuff, so the 7/4 FAV goes as our top selection in Ascot Gold Cup tips* (odds recorded at 18:54 GMT on March 14th, 2022 at William Hill).

How can you not have a fancy for STRADIVARIUS? He showed that he isn’t done and dusted yet with a winning reappearance.

But the age stats are against him and the frailties crept in last season as he was shown up by Trueshan.

Trueshan would have been the pick were it not for the conditions and there’s no guarantee that he runs.

We are going to pull towards the experienced PRINCESS ZOE as a good selection here at 15/2* (odds recorded at 18:54 GMT on March 14th, 2022 at William Hill).

She has proven herself against the best in this division before, and Princess Zoe produced an eye-catching run to take second in last year’s renewal.
