Sebastian Vettel 11/4, Lewis Hamilton 7/2, Fernando Alonso 6/1, Kimi Raikkonen 12/1, Romain Grosjean 12/1, Mark Webber 12/1, Jenson Button 16/1

The home based McLaren team and their British driver duo of Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button will be hoping for a better weekend at Silverstone. Both of them struggled at Valencia for the European Grand Prix last time out, with Hamilton taking a crash on lap 55, while Button didn’t have the pace to compete and could only finish down in eighth spot. Hamilton will be looking for a big bounce back after having his race ruined in Spain by Pastor Maldonado, but the British diver is still sitting third in the Drivers’ World Championship and in contention. He has been helped out by a very evenly matched season across the board between the teams, and it wasn’t until last week, when Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso took a win for the second time this season, that any driver had managed more than one win. So Hamilton is in contention still and what better way to get back on track than a strong performance in front of your home crowd?

Hamilton, who won the British Grand Prix for the only time in his career back in 2008, may be slightly troubled from the new pace they have seen from Red Bull in Spain. However, the Silverstone track should play right into the wheelhouse of the McLaren’s strengths, as the car should be better suited to the high speed track. Comparisons between Silverstone and Barcelona are abound, and the McLaren was dominantly fast at the Spanish Grand Prix. McLaren supposedly have upgrades coming to the car for Silverstone, and Lewis Hamilton looks the strongest bet out of the two British drivers to taste glory. His team mate Jenson Button just hasn’t gotten himself going this season, as he seems to be having a lot more trouble with the new tires that are being used, simply because of his more conservative and balanced driving style, than most. So seeing Button really push the pace isn’t likely, but with the car fitting the track, he could well push for a good top four finish. But at the end of the day, it is Hamilton who looks the strongest.

But the McLaren’s will come under threat from the Red Bull’s. The changes they made to the new improved rear end of the cars at Valencia seemed to inject a whole new life and pace into them. They also have done pretty well at Silverstone recently, taking back to back wins in 2009 and 2010 and they were on the front row for last season’s race here as well. So German driver Sebastian Vettel will be a front runner. He was looking majestic at Valencia last time out, and was only denied a victory by a car fault, or else he would have been celebrating. The Red Bull team really seem to have upped the ante again, and will throw down a big challenge to McLaren’s in their own back yard. So Vettel’s team mate Mark Webber should also be in the running. Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso took the win here last year and it is the Spaniard who leads the Drivers’ World Championship by twenty points, so he will want a big consolidation race to maintain his position at the top.
