One of the biggest names of jump racing, Altior, has pulled out of Saturday’s Silviniaco Conti Chase at Kempton. Trainer Nicky Henderson wasn’t happy with how Altior looked early this week and so he won’t in action.

Altior still on course for Cheltenham Return

Henderson will still be targeting Altior for his Cheltenham Festival return this year, saying that he will only need to get in the one run before then. That will probably be at Newbury’s Betfair Exchange Chase in early February.

This weekend’s withdrawal has been a blow for punters, who were excited to see Altior back in action.

His 19 run-winning streak ended last November by Cyrname and so there was going to be a big spotlight on how Altior would respond to that.

A response didn’t come in the King George VI Chase on Boxing Day, which he had been targeted for. But a health issue kept him out of action at the end of the year. An abscess has been the problem, and it has flared up again now, meaning he can’t wear a saddle.
