Atletico Madrid v Chelsea Betting Preview – UEFA Champions League 27th September 7.45pm

This was always going to be Chelsea’s toughest game in the group. Atletico Madrid are in a new home this season so this isn’t at the Vicente Calderon, which may be a blessing for Chelsea in dodging that intimidating atmosphere. But the Premier League champions go as underdogs for their trip to Spain and they will know that they are in for a tough duel against a very organized and dangerous side. Will it be home advantage that wins the day?

Atletico Madrid v Chelsea Betting Tips

This will be a big night for Atletico Madrid as they get to play their first ever Champions League game at their new home, the Estadio Metropolitano. They had a proud old record at the Vicente Calderon, and some impressive recent form, so will that translate over to their new home? They never lost at home against an English side at the Calderon and as recently as last season was the last time they faced a side from the Premier League. They met up with Leicester in the quarter finals last season, with Atletico winning 1-0 at home with a 1-1 draw played out at the King Power between them. That home win though over the Foxes extended their unbeaten form on home soil against English clubs to W6 D5. Atletico Madrid have won just two of their last six at home against English sides though. Atletico are unbeaten now in six games against English sides home and away in Europe. At the Calderon, Atletico won 30 of their last 36 European fixtures and are unbeaten in 11 home games in Europe (W9 D2) and won five of their six on home soil last season. This has the look of being a tight game and under 2.5 goals at bet365 is a 4/7 poke.

This is probably going to be Chelsea’s toughest game of the group, even though they will still have to go to Roma. Roma and Atletico drew on match day one. This will be the fifth meeting between Chelsea and Atletico Madrid and things are even between them from the previous clashes with one win each and two wins. Chelsea romped to an opening win over Karabakh on match day one but they aren’t going to get an easy time of things here. In the bet365 correct score market, an Atletico 1-0 result is the shortest priced option at 11/2. A 1-1 option is a 5/1 price. Chelsea have drawn each of their last five matches in Spain and they are unbeaten there in their last nine visits to Spain (D2 L7). Chelsea’s overall record away to Spanish clubs is W3 D7 L5. Chelsea have won their Champions League group on each of their last three appearances and avoiding defeat would not be a bad result in this one. In the anytime goalscorer market, Antoine Griezmann is the 5/4 favourite with Chelsea’s Alvaro Morata at 2/1. There is Roma waiting in the wings as well in this group, and Chelsea have to avoid defeat in these tough away games to boost their chances of progressing.

Atletico Madrid v Chelsea Predictions

Atletico Madrid to win: This is going to be a hard game for Chelsea to manage. They haven’t been overly strong at the back this season and could get a European lesson from Atleti in this one. There’s value in backing the Spaniards on home soil to land an important win.
