About the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase

The Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase is a Grade 1 fixture at a distance of about 3m 1/2f.

This is held on the Old Course with a testing 22 fences in place. This is a novices’ chase and mares get a 7lb allowance for it.

The race gets its name through sponsorship and this is really a big fixture to look forward to.

It has produced some future Gold Cup winners, with Lord Windermere knocking off the double in 2014 having won the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase the previous year.

The first running of the race was in 1946 and there have been some famous names and the score, including the likes of Denman, Bobs Worth, Might Bite and Presenting Percy from the modern era.

Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase contenders – 16th March 2022

Next for this Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase betting guide for the Cheltenham Festival 2022 we examine some of those who are towards the front of the market.

There has been a strong favourite in the form of the Willie Mullins-trained GALOPIN DES CHAMPS at the head of Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase betting.

He is a current quote of 5/6 odds-on to land the score* (odds recorded at 18:15 GMT on March 9th, 2022 at William Hill).

He has taken an early entry for Thursday’s Golden Miller but this looks like a more probable destination.

Galopin Des Champions has won his first two over the fences this season and with some aplomb as well.

The 6-year-old scored at Grade 1 February in the Ladbrokes Novice Chase by a cool 9l.

The big chance for Paul Nicholls comes from BRAVEMANSGAME who looks like a brilliant chaser in the making and he has proven form behind him this season.

It’s been four wins from four for Bravemansgame in this sphere, with the biggest of those being the Grade 1 Kauto Star Novices at Kempton in December.

He should give the favourite plenty to think about.

Brown Advisory Field Runs Deep

L’HOMME PRESSE is another of the big early showers in Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase betting for 2022.

He has landed all four wins over the fences and has looked better and better each time.

L’Homme Presse was moved up to the top tier for his latest run which was at Sandown in early February and duly bolted up to win by 21l in the Scilly Isles.

The 5/1 shot looks like a big player if he takes the slot instead of the Golden Miller* (odds recorded at 18:15 GMT on March 9th, 2022 at William Hill).

AHOY SENOR was heavily beaten by Bravemansgame in the Kauto Star Novices’ in December but did have the beating of that rival in last year’s Grade 1 Sefton over the hurdles.

There’s really been nothing wrong with his form and Ahoy Senor immediately bounced back to winning ways last time out with a score at Wetherby.

There is a fair chance that this field will be looking a lot different come Cheltenham Festival week with a lot of the big players holding dual-entries into Thursday’s Golden Miller.

But other ante-post picks for the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase betting are FURY ROAD, THREEUNDERTHRUFIVE and BEACON EDGE. Once again this could be a seriously competitive renewal.

To do that, we cast an eye back over the last 20 editions of this Grade 1 fixture.

Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase Trainer Statistics

This race has proven to be a big scrap for supremacy between Willie Mullins and Nicky Henderson in recent editions.

They have both won the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase four times in the last 20 editions.

It has been two wins each for the duo inside the last seven renewals so their entries for 2022 are rightly going to be sized up strongly.

The all-time leading trainer of the fixture is Mullins though who has won it a total of five times in his long career.

Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase Jockey Statistics

The leading jockey of all time in the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase is Pat Taaffe who won it five times, including once with Arkle in 1963 and for the last time in 1970 on Proud Tarquin.

Bringing things a little more up to date, we can see that there is only one active jockey who has landed this race on more than one occasion.

That is Davy Russel with three wins in the last two decades. Those have actually all been since 2010, with his most recent success coming on Presenting Percy in 2018.

Other Key Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase Trends

We have already touched on the fact that four of the last editions have been won by the race favourite on the day. Four of the last five winners have been Irish bred horses.

Digging into some Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase trends a little deeper each of the last 20 winners had made between 3 and 7 starts in the previous 12 months.

None of the last 20 winners of this race had been bigger than 33/1.

The last win of each of the last 20 successful horses in the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase was at a distnae of no more than 3m.

All but one of the winners in the last two decades had placed between 2 and 4 times that season and all but two scored the win from being within the first eight in the betting market.

Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase 2021 Review

MONKFISH comfortably delivered the odds in the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase 2021 renewal by more than six lengths.

He has been so heavily blacked in the market that he went off at a 1/4 SP for trainer Willie Mullins.

Paul Townend was on his back and brought him home still going away at the finish. Monkfish even made a mistake at the last and still had plenty to spare.

FIDDLERONTHEROOF who was a big 40/1 shot battled superbly to take second place and held on to the spot after moving into the spot a couple from home.

THE BIG BREAKAWAY was in good shape halfway round and had moved into the lead three from home but faded away for the win chances by was still well clear of the one other runner that competed. The 2021 Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase had just six starters.
