Catterick Tuesday 16:15: Coral offer 5/2 racing odds on Ask Paddy- 25th February 2020

Ask Paddy strongly favoured for Easby Abbey Handicap Chase

Horse Racing Betting

There is some good chase action to come late into the afternoon at Catterick on Tuesday. This class 4 handicap chase is a 3m 1f 54y fixture with 10 entrants (minimum 5 year old). It is Ask Paddy who has been fairly dominating the betting market for this Easby Abbey Handicap Chase. He is the one to beat, but is anyone good enough to do so?

Ask Paddy the front runner for Catterick test

Eight-year-old Ask Paddy, trained by Sam England, is a former course and distance winner. He has already won twice at C&D this season in fact, the first of those coming on January 9th and then on January 22nd at class 4 and then class 5 respectively.

He is looking for his fourth straight win and he should be fine stepping back up to class 4 on Tuesday. He seems to enjoy the bigger tests of stamina and so some softer ground on Tuesday is going to play into his hands.

Following his success at Sedgefield on January 26th, which was just a comfortable easy run for him, he goes up 8lb. He has really held it together though and has been progressing well. Even with the extra weight, he should handle the company as the 9/4 favourite* (betting odds taken from Coral at 20:03 on Monday, February 24th, 2020)

Agamemmon

The Henry Oliver-trained Agamemmon was third last time out. That was in a three-mile chase at Doncaster last month. He was 8l back of winner Very First Time in that race. He does have the distance in him to have claims here, having won a couple of chases and an NH flat between 2m to 3m 2f on good and soft ground.

The last win that Agamemmon recorded was at Sedgefield in early December and that recent run at Doncaster was his first outing since then. This will be his Catterick debut and he has been well supported at 4/1* (betting odds taken from Coral at 20:03 on Monday, February 24th, 2020).

Absolutely Dylan

Seven-year-old Absolutely Dylan will have a bit of handicap advantage on his side. He was a faller on his last trip which was at Wetherby. Absolutely Dylan was 5/1 for the race and took a tumble at the 5th in soft conditions in the chase.

But he had positioned himself well in the race and was looking comfortable being in touch with the leaders before the fall and lines up at 11/2* (betting odds taken from Coral at 20:03 on Monday, February 24th, 2020).

Loose Chips

Loose Chips recorded a win on his last trip, beating Dylanseoghan by two and a half lengths at Plumpton in soft conditions over a 3m 2f trip. He doesn’t mind the grind at all and during his career has won three hurdles and eight chases from 2m to 3m 2f on varying types of ground.

Yes, he’s a 14-year-old veteran of the sport and has been used to taking on the higher class company than this before. The win at Plumpton was the 11th win overall in his career and will pique some interest at 6/1* (betting odds taken from Coral at 20:03 on Monday, February 24th, 2020).

Outsider interests

Top-rated Above Board was a faller at Wetherby in a chase last month. It was a hefty old tumble that he took in the race as well and so that will cast doubt over him. It’s not as if he was running in great form this season before that anyway.

Grange Ranger pulled a second-place finish out of his hat at Ballindenisk in December over a 3m trip (soft). He was the 5/2 favourite for the race, which was a point-to-point affair. This will be the first race for him under new trainer Micky Hammond after a chance of stable.

The rest of the runners

Againn Dul Aghaidh managed to take third place at Warwick in December, but that was only over 2m 4f. But that could have been seen as a decent success considering that he had pulled up in two races before that. He did win a 2m 7f chase at Ffos Las in June last year.

Late Date was sixth of 9 on his last trip which was at 3m 2f at Sedgefield last month. He was well beaten in the race by Ask Paddy, however. Cairnshill has just been dropping away in form. He is a former distance winner but was only fifth of 8 from a big 18/1 mark at Kelso in December.

Fionn Mac Cul pulled up yet again in his latest race, a 2m 4f chase. That’s three in a row now for him and hasn’t won for over four years.

Predictions & Tips

Ask Paddy has looked good enough to handle a weight rise and some decent company to get a win in this race. His easy win at Sedgefield recently showed that he has plenty more in the tank to come and looks just about as solid as it gets. The conditions are likely to be favourable for him too.

There isn’t a great deal to oppose him with in the race, but Agamemmon looks like the best challenger. He was third at Doncaster in a race where he just wasn’t pushed over a shorter trip.
