Who will head the field as favourite?

French challenger Duc Kauto brings some form to the table having taken a win and a second place finish in his last two outings. Trained by Colin Tizzard, he is expected to be there or thereabouts at the win. He has won over the distance before. He will have plenty of appeal for punters, in shaking off having been a beaten favourite in his last outing which was at Wincanton in December. It wasn’t a reason to desert him, having won a hurdle and a chase of at least 2m in his career.

Right there at 9/4 odds at the head of the market* (betting odds taken from Boylesports on January 5th, 2020 at 9:33 pm) with Duc Kauto is Dorking Cock for Tom Lacey. He is an improving horse and his chances of delivering could be improved with the going. In his last outing at a Chase at Chepstow in December over 2m 3f saw him take a fourth place finish. Earlier this year he won back to back Class 4 handicap hurdles.

Can Spring Wolf get in the fame

In his last two outings Spring Wolf has pulled up. That’s not the kind of thing to attract a punter. The most recent of those was at Taunton in early December. At the start of 2019 he produced back-to -back wins at Exeter and Taunton over 2m 3f and 2m 4f. He has it in him and he can get his feet and temperament right, he could put in a decent run as a 5/1 shot* (betting odds taken from Boylesports on January 5th, 2020 at 9:33 pm)

So too The Gipper who has won six hurdles over a 2m distance in varying conditions. His last outing didn’t see him in his sharpest form, coming home 8th over a 2m hurdle at Ffos Las in December. He is course and distance winner, but that was back in February 2017. His official rating has dropped significantly since then but he has three career wins on the course.

Other notes

Russian Service who has had some seriously mixed form recently, may be easier in switching back to fences for this chase. He is a course and distance winner, but with no current from behind him. Twasn’t The Plan has a lot more about him than a poor run out at Sedgefield in his last effort.

Prediction

Duc Kauto has some solid form behind him for Colin Tizzard and has to take preference here. Dorking Cock is well worth sizing up because of the weights, but it is The Gipper at a more appealing 13/2 quote* (betting odds taken from Boylesports on January 5th, 2020 at 9:33 pm) who could be the one to get close to Tizzard’s favourite.
