Commonwealth Cup Stakes History

As far as Commonwealth Cup tips for Royal Ascot, we have only been looking at them since 2015.

That’s when the race was inaugurated as some changes were made to the sprint calendar across Europe.

The Commonwealth Cup was created as a direct replacement for the Diamond Jubilee Stakes which was at the same course and distance.

The difference was that the entry was changed to only three-year-olds. The Commonwealth Cup bumped the Buckingham Palace Stakes from the Festival.

It did create some history as the race was open to geldings, the only Group 1 race of its kind in Great Britain for 3-year-olds only on the flat.

Geldings were removed from the equation after the 2019 edition.

Perfect Power 4/1 FAV in Commonwealth Cup Racing Odds

PERFECT POWER carries on the Ascot scene on Friday with some big expectations hovering over him.

He was right on top of his game last year as a juvenile, racking up the victories.

Among all of that was a victory in the Norfolk at Royal Ascot 2021.

On his reappearance run this year Perfect Power landed the Greenham which showed further improvement from him.

He was then sent to the 2000 Guineas, but failed to stay in that one and could only finish in the middle of the pack.

The drop back in distance is going to help his claims massively. This is well within his range.

Perfect Power is the current 4/1 favourite in Royal Ascot odds* (odds recorded at 20:45 GMT on June 15th, 2022 at Paddy Power).

EL CABALLO
11/2

Commonwealth Cup Betting Contenders

We have taken a look at Perfect Power who is heading up the market for this year’s renewals of the Commonwealth Cup.

But this is a big field and it’s been a while since a favourite got their nose in front.

So we push on with Commonwealth Cup tips with a look at some of the other main contenders.

EL CABALLO has proven to be something very special for his connections and he has won all six starts since taking a runner-up spot on his debut.

He is red hot at the moment, having completed a four-timer a month ago in the Sandy Lane Stakes at Haydock.

El Caballo has a superb attitude and has beaten Tiber Flow and Flaming Rib already this season.

The aforementioned TIBER FLOW is another of the big contenders after proving to be highly progressive on the all-weather.

After racking up a hat trick of wins, he was narrowly beaten by El Caballo at Newcastle earlier this season.

But he was right back in the mood when scoring at Newbury last month.

FLAMING RIB is worth a look here after proving himself superbly during his juvenile campaign.

On his opening race of this season, he scored at Chester in a minor event before taking an excellent runner-up to El Caballo in the Sandy Lane, That was only by a neck.

Another that commands respect is SLIPSTREAM who was a Grade 3 scorer in the US as a juvenile.

A win at Keeneland on his reappearance 68 days ago shows that he has the ability to get into big contests at the top level like this.

WINGS OF WAR is another that warrants respect despite not having won as a 3-year-old yet.

Back in September on his final run of a juvenile campaign, he dug out a brilliant win at Newbury in the Mill Reef.

Wings Of War was third behind El Caballo and Flaming Rib at Haydock on his latest and can’t be dismissed.

This is a really strong renewal of the Commonwealth Cup.

Other names that are worthy of mention are GO BEARS GO who was fourth in the Sandy Lane, and EHRAZ who was only just touched off at Newbury behind Tiber Flow.

Last 7 Commonwealth Cup Winners at the Royal Ascot

2020 Golden HOrde 5/1 Adam Kirby Clive Cox
2019 Advertise 8/1 Frankie Dettori Martyn Meade
2018 Eqtidaar 12/1 Jim Crowley Sir Michael Stoute
2017 Caravaggio 5/6F Ryan Moore A P O’Brien
2016 Quiet Reflection 7/4F Dougie Costello K R Burke
2015 Muhaarar 10/1 Dane O’Neill Charles Hills

Commonwealth Cup Favourites – Royal Ascot Betting

Again we only have the seven renewals of this race to look back on. Just two of those previous editions were won by the favourite on the day. T

hose were in back-to-back years as well, with Quiet Reflection in 2016 and Caravaggio in 2017.

The longest-priced winner of the Commonwealth Cup has been the 12/1 winner Eqtidaar in 2018.

Three of the previous winners did come home at least 8/1 odds. We just want to expand on that a little bit further.

Each of the previous editions were within the first six in the market, so that’s worth considering for your Commonwealth Cup betting tips for 2022.

Commonwealth Cup Trends

Trends are important for helping to pick out winners. This is not a race where there is a massive amount of history to score back through in order to find the trends.

But we are heading into the eighth renewal and there have been some steady trends building.

Commonwealth Cup Trends Royal Ascot

  • All previous winners had previously posted between 1 and 3 wins at this distance
  • All previous winners had taken their most recent win at least at Group 3 level
  • Each of the seven winners had made between 4 and 7 career starts
  • All winners have previous been at an OR of at least 107
  • The seven winner had had 3 or fewer starts for the season
  • None of the previous winners had been bigger than 16/1 last time out
  • All but one of the previous seven winners had previously landed a Group 2

Commonwealth Cup Trainer & Jockey Trends

We are jumping onto the jockey trends next for Commonwealth Cup tips. First off the bat, six of the seven previous winners of this race had previously placed with the jockey.

There are only three jockeys in this year’s lineup that have previously carried a winner home in this race.

Those are Ryan Moore, Adam Kirby and Jim Crowley.

The latter has the best strike record, getting his success from three appearances.

We are in the same boat for trainer trends for the Commonwealth Cup.

Aiden O’Brien, Clive Cox and Karl Burke are the only trainers in action this year with previous wins.

Burke has El Caballo for the 2022 renewal, Aiden O’Brien has Cadamosto and Clive Cox has Wings Of War.

Wings Of War, therefore, carries a previous winning jockey for a winning yard, as does the pairing of Ryan Moore and Aiden O’Brien on Cadamosto.

Commonwealth Cup Tips & Predictions Royal Ascot 2022

We have come to our Commonwealth Cup Tips for Friday’s action at Royal Ascot.

The first on the list is EL CABALLO as he has had the beating of some of these in Tiber Flow and Flaming Ribs to name a couple of the key ones.

El Caballo really hasn’t put a wrong on his progress so far and naturally looks a big player in this one at 11/2* (odds recorded at 20:45 GMT on June 15th, 2022 at Paddy Power).

We are going to pull GO BEARS GO into the picture as he did open this season with a course and distance score.

His Group 2 effort in the Sandy Lane can be excused as he stumbled coming out of the gate and immediately was at a disadvantage before recovering for fourth.

Go Bears Go is 9/1 in Commonwealth Cup tips* (odds recorded at 20:45 GMT on June 15th, 2022 at Paddy Power).

The final shortlisted selection is PERFECT POWER who did pick up a victory at last year’s Royal Festival and that is a big piece of form.

With Group 1 wins under his belt as well, he looks top class, particularly in the Greenham at Newbury.

The 2000 Guineas looked too far for him, but this is well within his range and is a big 4/1 contender* (odds recorded at 20:45 GMT on June 15th, 2022 at Paddy Power).
