City Of York Stakes Favourites and Outsiders

The City Of York Stakes preview kicks off with a look at the way results have gone in terms of the favourites.

Last year’s winner SPACE BLUES delivered the odds as the favourite for trainer Charlie Appleby.

That continued a pretty solid trend of favourites getting their noses in front in the City Of York Stakes.

Five of the last six renewals of the Group 2 contest have gone to the favourite. None of those incidentally had been odds-on favourites for their respective contests.

For a deeper look at the race favourites, 15 of the last 24 race favourites (including joint-favourites) have finished in the top three.

Narrowing that down even further for the City Of York trends, seven of the last eight favourites (including J/F) have finished inside the top two.

So there has been a good trend of following the race favourite.

That leads us to the 2022 favourite SACRED at 7/2 for this year’s renewal* (odds recorded at 23:02 GMT on August 15th, 2022 at Ladbrokes).

Will the race pan out in her favour for being so well-supported at the head of the market?

Longer-priced winners

What about diving down the market a little bit deeper? Do the trends suggest that a big outside is going to pull through? Not at all.

The longest-priced winner in the last 10 renewals was a 9/1 shot TALAAYEB in 2017, outrunning the odds for trainer Owen Burrows.

He is just one of two winners in the last ten editions to have won the contest at bigger than a 5/1 SP. So that narrows the field a bit.

Each of the last 21 renewals of the City Of York Stakes has been won by horses who were inside the first 7 of the market.

About the City Of York Stakes

The City Of York Stakes is the only Group contest that is run on the final day of the Ebor Festival at York Racecourse. The move to this grade was only made in 2019, having been previously pumped up to Group 3 in 2016.

Before all of that the City Of York Stakes had been a Listed grade contest. It’s not one of the oldest races around as it was only inaugurated in 1998 when Thaidah crossed the line first.

The race is a 7f contest on the left-handed track. Fillies and mares receive a 3lb allowance for the contest. There are varying degrees of penalties handed out to previous Group winners as well, with Group 1 winners receiving a hefty 7lb penalty.

City Of York Stakes contenders – 20th August 2022

Leading the way in the 2022 renewal of the City Of York Stakes is SACRED at 7/2 currently* (odds recorded at 23:02 GMT on August 15th, 2022 at Ladbrokes).

She is a good one and the 3-year-old was fifth in the Lennox Stakes at Goodwood last time out.

Sacred won a couple of big races on this trip and is likely to go well again. SANDRINE is another of the big players for this one and had a great time of things as a juvenile winning her first three runs.

Sandrine looks to potentially be boiling up at the right time for this one after a good victory in the Lennox Stakes last time you.

That victory was taken over another of this year’s hopefuls KINROSS.

Kinross generally comes up with a good attitude, and he claimed the Hungerford Stakes at Newbury on his latest effort.

That was a week ago, so faces a quick turnaround this weekend.

Among the other leading contenders for the fixture, there are the likes of ROHAAN and the AL SUHAIL who goes for last year’s winning trainer Charlie Appleby.

City Of York Stakes Trends Ebor Festival 2022

For the next part of this City Of York Stakes Preview 2022, we are going to dive into some of the trends surrounding the event. To do that, we cast an eye back over the last 20 editions of this Group 2 fixture.

City Of York Stakes Trainer Statistics

Now our preview dips into the trainer statistics. There is a clear trainer to watch for in this race. That is Andrew Balding who has scored 4 times from 10 entries in the last two decades.

That’s a big strike rate. For the 2022 City Of York Stakes, he saddles one of the leading contenders. That is SANDRINE who is a current quote of 9/2* (odds recorded at 23:02 GMT on August 15th, 2022 at Ladbrokes).

The most recent victory of Andrew Balding was delivered with SHINE SO BRIGHT in 2019.

Willie Haggas is the only other trainer two have won this race more than once and is entering this year.

He stands at two wins from eight previous entries into the City of York Stakes. It has been a fair while since Haggas saw home a winner, however, as his successes were in 2002 and 2004.

Last year’s winner Charlie Appleby is the only other active trainer involved in this year’s contest to have won the race. Appleby’s score came at the fifth attempt.

City Of York Stakes Jockey Statistics

There is a clear leader when it comes to the jockey statistics over the last 20 editions of the City Of York Stakes. William Buick has won three times from just four rides. So he is one to be interested in.

Interestingly Buick teams up with last year’s winning trainer Charlie Appleby this year. Buick is booked for AL SUHAIL who is a 7/1 contender currently* (odds recorded at 23:02 GMT on August 15th, 2022 at Ladbrokes).

The only other winning jockey who is going into this year’s renewal is Frankie Dettori. His lone score in the Ebor Festival fixture was in 2018 on the back of EXPERT EYE.

Other Key City Of York Stakes Trends

For some of the other City Of York trends, there have been 19 winners produced by British trainers in the last 21 renewals, with the other two going to Ireland.

As for age, there has been a recent trend toward 3-year-olds.

Five of the last seven renewals of the contest have been won by a 3-year-old contender. Since 2010 there has been just one winner of the race that was older than five.

That was 2020 victor SAFE VOYAGE who was a 7-year-old at the time.

Note that for the following trends, we are looking at 21 winners. That’s because the 2009 renewal produced a dead heat.

That was between Andrew Balding’s DREAM EATER and Sir Michael Stoute’s CONFRONT.

  • Each of the last 21 winners came from within the first 7 of the market
  • None of the winners sin the last two decades had been bigger than 10/1 on their last win
  • A debut within a field of between 7-19 runners was recorded by each of the last 20 renewal winner
  • Had not won at bigger than 20/1 in their career
  • Each of the last 21 winners had placed previously over a 7f trip.
  • There hasn’t been a winner at bigger than 14/1 in the last 20 renewals
  • All but two of the last 21 winners had run at least a 7-furlong trips last time out
  • 19 of the last 21 runners had been between 3 and 5 years old
  • No more than 133lbs was carried last time out by 18 of the last 21 winners

City Of York Stakes 2021 Review

Last year’s winner of the City Of York Stakes was SPACE BLUES who delivered the goods at the 11/8 FAV. He took his time under a patient ride under William Buick through the early stages of the contest.

3f from home Space Blues started to move and was pushed then from two furlongs out. He was as keen and as responsive as Buick could have asked for in the final throes of the fixtures, winning by a length and a half.

HIGHFIELD PRINCESS came home at a 17/2 SP. She took a bolder approach and was really tucked in nicely towards the front. 1f to go she was battling for the second spot and was nudged into the lead.

While she couldn’t touch Space Blues, Highfield Princess did a great job in just staying on to hold off GLORIOUS JOURNEY by a neck. The latter just lacked a finish at the crucial time.
