Yorkshire Oaks Favourites and Outsiders
There has been a heavy trend of winning favourites cropping up in recent editions of the Yorkshire Oaks.
Will the trend continue on Thursday at the 2022 York Ebor Festival?
Each of the last five renewals of the fixtures has been won by the favourite on the day. Four of those were odds-on favourites as well. That recent run of winning favourites has boosted the tally to six in the last ten renewals.
SNOWFALL, trained by Aiden O’Brien and ridden by Ryan Moore took the win in last year’s contest.
That duo followed up their 2020 score with LOVE in the contest.
The current favourite in the ante-post market for Yorkshire Oaks betting is ALPINISTA at 2/1* (odds recorded at 18:50 GMT on August 13th, 2022 at Bet365).
How far down the betting list is it worth looking? Looking back at the last ten renewals, only two winners have been priced bigger than 3/1.
Those were Tapestry in 2014 and Pleascach the following year, both taking a victory from an 8/1 SP.
Turning that back to the favourites. The race day favourite has been in the top two in each of the last ten renewals of the Yorkshire Oaks at the York Ebor Festival.
It’s been that way in 16 of the last 20 editions. So a definite trend is there and it could be good news for Alpinista’s 2022 bid.

About the Yorkshire Oaks
The Yorkshire Oaks was inaugurated in 1849 and through the early editions, it was a contest only for 3-year-old fillies.
Come the early 1970s when the current grading system was introduced into British Racing, the Yorkshire Oaks was given Group 1 status from the offer.
Twenty years later, entries for the race changed as it was opened to fillies and mares. It’s annually run on the second day of the York Ebor Festival.
It’s common to see competitors who went to The Oaks earlier in the year. So more often than not, you get a lot of runners that have been up against each other before.
In 2021 Snowfall won The Oaks and the Yorkshire Oaks in the same season.
The Yorkshire Oaks is held at a distance of 1m 3f 188y. In 2008 the race was moved to Newmarket, the only time it has not been hosted at York.
Yorkshire Oaks contenders – 18th August 2022
ALPINISTA is the current 2/1 favourite in Yorkshire Oaks betting 2022* (odds recorded at 18:50 GMT on August 13th, 2022 at Bet365).
She will be putting her undefeated record on the line on Thursday. It’s been three wins from three from her.
The 5-year-old has had one run in 2022, which was at Salisbury in early July. But that was a Group 1 over in France.
All three of the French mare’s wins have been at the top level.
MAGICAL LAGOON is likely to be another big player in Yorkshire Oaks betting. The 3-year-old has made a massive impression this season.
She reappeared after a break to take the Group 2 Ribblesdale before going on to take the Irish Oaks at the Curragh in July.
Magical Laggon comes in as a current ante-post 7/2 contender* (odds recorded at 18:50 GMT on August 13th, 2022 at Bet365).
Another fascinating entry in the Yorkshire Oaks is Aiden O’Brien’s TUESDAY.
The filly is still packed with ability, fully confirmed when she took the Epsom Oaks in June.
That was by a short head over Emily Upjohn who sadly is bypassing the Yorkshire Oaks 2022.
Tuesday was fourth in the Irish Derby at the Curragh last time out.
LA PETITE COCO could be another to warrant respect as she arrives at York in winning form. La Petite Coco completed a four-timer last time out.
After a break since September last year, she arrived at the Curragh to take the Pretty Polly Stakes in June.
Other players that could make their presence felt in the Yorkshire Oaks 2022 include LILAC ROAD and ALBAFLORA.
Yorkshire Oaks Trends Ebor Festival 2022
For the next part of this Yorkshire Oaks Preview 2022, we are going to dive into some of the trends surrounding the event. To do that, we cast an eye back over the last 20 editions of this Group 1 fixture.
Yorkshire Oaks Trainer Statistics
Diving into the trainer statistics for the Yorkshire Oaks trends, there are some big names in play.
The leader from the last 20 renewals is Aiden O’Brien who has produced six winners.
That’s from 29 entries, so he’s usually heavy-handed in the contest. Aiden O’Brien has a couple lined up for the 2022 contest.
Oaks winner TUESDAY is 4/1 while he also sends HISTORY and EMILY DICKINSON into action* (odds recorded at 18:50 GMT on August 13th, 2022 at Bet365)..
John Gosden (4), Sir Michael Stoute (3) and Jim Bolger (2) have all won the race more than once in the last 20 renewals.
John Gosden’s last three wins have come in the most recent nine renewals, and two of those were with ENABLE in 2017 and 2019.
Yorkshire Oaks Jockey Statistics
For the Yorkshire Oaks jockey trends, three jockeys have won more than once in the last two decades in this fixture. Those are Ryan Moore and Frankie Dettori with three wins each, while Kevin Manning makes up the trio with two successes.
Ryan Moore has won the last two renewals, both rides for trainer Aiden O’Brien. Frankie Dettori scored twice in the last five renewals. His victories were on the back of Enable for trainer John Gosden.
Other Key Yorkshire Oaks Trends
Seven of the last eight winners of the Yorkshire Oaks have been 3-year-olds. The one exception was Enable’s second victory in the contest, taken in 2019 as a 5-year-old.
So the age trend is not in favour of the 2022 favourite Alpinsta. But both MAGICAL LAGOON and TUESDAY are 3-year-olds for this year’s renewal.
- Each of the last 20 Yorkshire Oaks winners came from the first 4 in the market
- None of the last 20 renewals was won by a horse bigger than 14/1 last time out
- The last 20 winners had scored off a break of 17-62 days
- A debut of 6f to 1m was had by each of the last 20 winners.
- A Group 2 at least had been run by 19 of the last 20 Yorkshire Oaks winners
- All but one of the last 20 winners has previously contested a Group 1
- At least at Group 2 victory had been taken by 18 of the last 20 victors
Yorkshire Oaks 2021 Review
In the 2021 Yorkshire Oaks, Japanese raider SNOWFALL took the spoils at York for trainer Aiden O’Brien. She didn’t get the cleanest of stars but settled in after about 4 furlongs into the contest.
Snowfall had been an overwhelming 8/15 odds-on favourite for the race. When she was pushed on by jockey Ryan Moore 2f from home, she fulfilled those odds with relative ease.
16/1 shot ALBAFLORA was in second place in last year’s renewal, four lengths back of the winner.
She ran a similar kind of race to Snowfall, except for when it came down to the business end of things. Albalfora moved into second place a furlong from home, but Snowfall was already pulling well clear.
LA JOCONDE, from a massive 150/1 SP was ridden in third place superbly by Hollie Doyle. She just didn’t have enough to hold off the challenge of Albaflora for second place but ran with credit to keep on for third.
