When and where is the Epsom Derby 2022?

The famous Epsom Downs Racecourse in Surrey is the home of the Derby, which itself is part of the Epsom Derby Festival, a fantastic two-day event.

Epsom Down was opened way back in 1661 so there is such a rich history here and this year’s renewal is at 4:30 pm on Saturday, June 4th 2022.

Epsom Derby Details

The Derby is a Group 1 contest which is open to 3-year-old thoroughbreds (both colts and fillies).

The distance of the Derby is 1m 4f, which is the same distance as the other two big races of the Derby Festival, the Oaks and the Coronation Cup.

History of The Derby

The first edition of the Derby was in 1780. It used to be run on a Wednesday or a Thursday in either May or June.

It was in 1955 that the day of the race was shifted from the first Wednesday in June to the first Saturday in June, where it remains to this day.

Earlier editions of The Derby were over a mile, but it was moved up to the current one and a half-mile distance in 1784.

The all-time leading jockey of The Derby remains Lester Piggott with nine wins between 1954 and 1983.

A little more current, Aidan O’Brien is the leading trainer with eight wins, the most recent of his successes coming in 2020 with Serpentine.

Desert Crown – 9/4 FAV in Derby Odds 2022

It’s hard to deny the claims of DESERT CROWN after he picked up Dante at York with plenty to spare three weeks ago.

Desert Crown is the current 9/4 favourite in Epsom Derby racing odds* (odds recorded at 18:20 GMT on June 3rd, 2022 at Unibet).

He got the victory at York over Royal Patronage by more than three lengths.

That fully confirmed the ability and potential that he had shown when winning his debut at Nottingham last autumn.

There is a chance that he will be an even further improved model as well and he looks like being a high-class performer.

Desert Crown, who is trained by Sir Michael Stoute, looks uncomplicated and should be in the thick of the action.

Derby Data

  • There have been three winning favourites in the last ten renewals
  • However, none of the last six Epsom Derby renewals have been won by the favourite

Stone Age could shine for O’Brien

After seeing Tuesday get home for success on Friday in the Oaks, trainer Aiden O’Brien looks to make an impact in the Epsom Derby on Saturday with STONE AGE.

O’Brien is the leading trainer of this race, and he has, once again, a heavy hand in the Derby.

Stone Age went winless in his juvenile campaign but consistently put in good shifts in defeat.

The pick of his juvenile season was a runner up finish in the Criterium de Saint-Cloud.

But he has gotten stronger and has been improving further as a 3-year-old, winning two efforts.

Stone Age scored at Navan on his reappearance and then dominated Leopardstown’s Derby Trial.

He should have the trip in him comfortably as is a 9/2 contender in Epsom Derby odds* (odds recorded at 18:20 GMT on June 3rd, 2022 at Unibet).

Derby Data

  • The last four editions have been shared at two wins each for trainers Aiden O’Brien and Charlie Appleby
  • Aiden O’Brien trained six of the last ten winners of the Epsom Derby

The Chasing Pack

NATIONS PRIDE warrants plenty of respect from 15/2* (odds recorded at 18:20 GMT on June 3rd, 2022 at Unibet).

He opened his career with a runner up finish, before kicking into unbeaten mode.

It’s been four wins in four since his debut and Nations Pride has been supplemented for the Derby on the weekend.

His first couple of wins were novices on the all-weather but then has thrived since he was moved to the turf with scores at Meydan and Newmarket.

William Buick is in the saddle which is a plus.

CHANGINGOFTHEGUARD is seeking a hattrick and winning the Derby would be some way to achieve that.

Another of Aiden O’Brien’s crop of contenders, Changingoftheguard gets the cheek pieces on for the first time.

Despite not winning in three attempts as a juvenile, he’s been a strong model as a 3-year-old.

Changingoftheguard looks to have a superb engine in him and he blasted the field at the Group 3 Chester Vase on his latest run.

That was by a distance of seven lengths and was the same 1m 4f distance as the Epsom Derby.

So the stamina is there and the victory added to his reappearance win at Dundalk. Changingoftheguard is in fine nick.

Our betting prediction:
CHANGINGOFTHEGUARD
8/1

PIZ BADILE has won two of three runs and carries Frankie Dettori for Saturday’s Derby run at Epsom Downs.

There is a current 10/1 quote on Piz Badile to land the success* (odds recorded at 18:20 GMT on June 3rd, 2022 at Unibet).

The latest of his runs produced a win, a narrow one at the Ballysax Stakes at Leopardstown a couple of months ago.

Piz Badile just took it by a short head, largely thanks in the end to showing a willingness to fight it out.

There was a marked improvement from him in that run. Does he have more?

This extra distance will likely see him put in a strong effort.

Derby Data

  • Each of the last 20 winners had been in the first three last time out
  • Avoid runners who had ran 1m 3f or 1m 4f last time out
  • The last 20 Derby winners had scored previous on turf
  • All but one of the last 20 winners had ran at Group 3 or above
  • Only two of the last 20 winners had scored before at longer than 1m 2 1/2f
  • All but one of the last 20 Epsom Derby winners had come from the first eight in the market

Longer Epsom Derby Odds considerations

It’s always worth diving a little deeper into the Derby odds to try and spot any potential outsiders that could upset the field.

After all, there have been a few longer-priced winners come home in recent renewals of the Epsom Derby.

ROYAL PATRONAGE opened his juvenile campaign with three straight wins, including the Acomb and the Royal Lodge.

On his reappearance, he was 8th in the 2000 Guineas but was easily beaten by Desert Crown in the Dante when he was moved up in distance. Place claims could be there if he improves from that.

Derby Data

  • Four of the last five winners have been at least a 16/1 SP
  • 2017 winner Wings Of Eagles scored from 40/1

WALK OF STARS has been improving and has won two of his four appearances. He took a win in a small field at Newbury on his reappearance.

Walk Of Stars was then sent to the Derby Trial at Leopardstown and took a runner up spot, not going as smoothly as connections would have hoped for.

WESTOVER put in a marked improvement on his reappearance run at Sandown six weeks ago.

He’s a threat after that winning effort in the Classic Trial, albeit having to dig deep to hang in there at the line. He could be stronger for that and is interesting now taking on even further.

WEST WIND BLOWS is unbeaten so far in his two racetrack appearances.

He got off the mark on his Newcastle debut in December before shrugging off a penalty to score at Nottingham last month impressively. This is a big step up in class for him to handle on Saturday however.

Epsom Derby Tips

DESERT CROWN should be an obvious big player in this one and gets on the shortest for Sir Michael Stoute.

His performance in the Dante was just brilliant. It was a win that was delivered comfortably as well.

But we have a slight performance for Aiden O’Brien’s CHANGINGOFTHEGUARD in Epsom Derby Tips at 8/1 odds* (odds recorded at 18:20 GMT on June 3rd, 2022 at Unibet).

We can appreciate that he has proven stamina at this distance and his winning time of the Chester Vase should get him close.

The final shortlisted selection in Derby Odds is STONE AGE as we stay towards the front of the market at 9/2* (odds recorded at 18:20 GMT on June 3rd, 2022 at Unibet).

He is a good alternative for those looking to not back the favourite, and his performance at Leopardstown last time out in the Derby Trial gives him big claims.
