The Favourite: Ballybreen

The Evan Williams-trained Ballybreen has had little trouble in switching to the hurdles. He collected a win at Taunton over 3m earlier this month to continue some great form. That’s four wins in his last five runs now in chase and hurdle action combined.

He hasn’t even taken on a serious penalty for his last success and at just a 3lb rise from his Taunton strike, he looks like the one to beat without question.

Ballybreen collected a win at Hereford in early January in a 3m 1f chase. He is a 4/5 odds-on option for a repeat victory at the track* (betting odds taken from Boylesports at 21:00 GMT on Sunday, 15th March 2020).

Wayfinder

Six-year-old Wayfinder hasn’t quite brought it over the hurdles. After winning a Worcester bumper back in October last year, he switched to the hurdles and has taken one place in three attempts.

His last run was at Warwick in early February in a trip similar to this one. That was the longest trip of his career and while there was an early mistake, a mid-pack finish suggested that he could start finding his range

Wayfinder has been well supported in this company at 4/1 odds* (betting odds taken from Boylesports at 21:00 GMT on Sunday, 15th March 2020).

Definately Vinnie

Definately Vinnie is a good solid runner and usually brings consistency to the table. He was last seen at Ffos Las at the end of February when he collected a second-place finish at 3m 1f.

He is easily comfortable at the distance and with his last two runs both being over 3m, he looks as if he can be competitive in this one. He has a bit of grit in that staying power.

Definately Vinnie has struck at course and distance as well, the Hereford success coming in November 2018. He was 3rd of 10 on a return in a similar trip a few months later.

There is only the one place finish behind the winner available in this race, can Definately Vinnie get there from 9/2* (betting odds taken from Boylesports at 21:00 GMT on Sunday, 15th March 2020)?

Late Shipment

There’s a couple of interesting notes for Late Shipment. He is a previous course and winner and he was a beaten favourite last time out. His last run, in fact, his last two, have been at Hereford at this distance.

Late Shipment pulled up last time before that had produced a good second place at C&D. So he is familiar with all of this and even though he looks a little bit risky, he knows what he’s doing.

His course and distance win was in 2017 but his second-place effort recently back there may tempt punters at 7/1* (betting odds taken from Boylesports at 21:00 GMT on Sunday, 15th March 2020).

Colby

It is really hard to nail down the form of Colby. He always shapes up as being more than capable of striking in company like this. But more often than not, he fades quickly.

He finished 10th in his last effort which was at Warwick on a big 3m 2f trip when he weakened three from home. Before that though in December Colby did run soundly in an Exeter maiden to claim second.

All in all, though he looks to have even bigger risks attached than Late Shipment.

The rest of the runners

Crocodile Dundee will leave punters steering clear mostly likely as he has pulled up in each of his last three hurdle efforts, including his last two.

Emma’s Dilemma has had three starts for trainer Henry James after coming from Olly Murphy. On what she has produced she looks to be really struggling all around and tails off quickly.

Predictions & Tips

Definately Vinnie is a good consistent runner but lacks those wins on the board. He’s just not prolific enough to challenge the favourite, and Wayfinder hasn’t quite done enough hurdles to convince either.

So we cannot look past the favourite Ballybreen in this Hereford contest. He has struck in four of his last five efforts and can handle himself with ease.
