Will The Con Man be an honest favourite?

The Con Man made his hurdles debut a year ago. In it, he claimed a victory at Carlisle at the 2m 4f distance. After a year’s break, he was back in action in December 2019 taking back to back second place finishes at Haydock. So he is shaping up well and looks to be a good fit for this race.

He had been the favourite for his most recent trip at Haydock. But on the day he was beaten out by three lengths by Flinck. But still, it was another good run performance from him, and there looks as if there is more improvement right around the corner. The Con Man is the 13/8 favourite* (betting odds taken from William Hill on January 26th, 2020 at 20:13)

McGowan’s Pass to pull into contention

McGowan’s pass should be well in the frame in this contest. He won easily in some heavy going at Ayr last time out. That was in early January over a 2m distance, the third of his career at that distance.

That was a good enough run, albeit at Class 3 to have made punters sit up and take notice,. MgGowan’s Pass has been pulled into 5/2 second favourite* (betting odds taken from William Hill on January 26th, 2020 at 20:13).

Kelso-lover Bialco

Bialco loves a trip around Kelso. He brings a bit of form to the table as well, having won his last outing, just as McGowans Pass had done. Bialco got his recent success in December at Kelso, taking out Ahead Of The Curve by three and a half lengths. That added to a success that the French horse took at Perth this season as well. He claimed a 2m 6f win at Kelso back in March last year.

The Rest of the Pack

Lake View Lad comes back into action after a third-place finish at the Rowland Meyrick Handicap Chase at Wetherby last December. That was a three-mile trip. He finished a long way behind winner Top Ville Ben, however. It’s been a while since he has been out over the hurdles however, yet he has no issue with distance. He never quite follow up on his growth of 2018.

River Frost was third at 14/1 on his last hurdle outing which was at Weatherby in early January. He’s a very solid runner and has had a win a three place-finishes in his last four runs. Newtown Boy has some up and down form but has banked wins at both Haydock and Kelso this season. Was fourth in his last hurdle run from a 20/1 mark.

Predictions & Tips

This is a tight handicap but The Con Man is a fair weight and is going to take some serious consideration for the contest. He looks as if he is going to be there or thereabouts after just missing out against a couple of class rivals in recent runs.

There is some very nice appeal on McGowan’s Pass as well after delivering so easily at Ayr in his last race. The step-up in trip doesn’t look as if it is going to bother him and he just gets the nod
