King George Stakes Favourites and Outsiders

We start the King George Stakes tips preview with a look at how well the favourites have got on recently in the fixture.

There have been a fair chunk of winning favourites crop up in the last decade.

Five of the last 10 renewals of the contest have been won by the favourite on the day. But that is a little bit skewed.

That’s all down to the presence of the brilliant Battaash who dominated this fixture for so long.

Battaash, who isn’t back for another crack, was the winner of four of the last five renewals of the King George Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

Three of those were as the market favourite on the day. The other two favourites to get home first in the last ten renewals were Muthmir in 2015 and Ortensia in 2021.

The longest-priced winner in the last ten renewals was Take Cover in 2016 who got home from an 8/1 SP. Last year’s winner Suesa scored under William Buick from a quote of 7/1.

About the King George Stakes

The first edition of the King George stakes was held in 1911 and it was introduced to the scene to celebrate King George V’s coronation. It was a Group 3 contest when the new rating systems were introduced in the 1970s.

It was moved up a level to Group 2 in 2010. The race is generally seen as a good feeder for players to go to the Nunthorpe Stakes. The King George is a 5f sprint down the straight and fillies and mares claim a 3lb allowance.

King George Stakes contenders – July 29th, 2022

There is a fascinating rematch between MITBAAHY and RAASEL coming up in King George Stakes on Friday at Glorious Goodwood.

The two met recently in the Coral Charge at Sandown, in which Raasel came out on top. But that was by just a neck against his rival.

Raasel has had a brilliant season for his connections, who smartly moved him back to the turf. It has been three wins in his last four races. He has also scored two course and distance successes before.

Raasel is a current 5/1 contender in King George Stakes tips* (odds recorded at 21:37 GMT on July 28th, 2022 at Bet365).

Mitbaahy brings the heat

But he is going to be under huge pressure from Mitbaahy who pushed him so hard at Sandown. In that defeat by a neck, Mitbaahy missed out on a hattrick chance.

So his form too has been red hot and there were perhaps mitigating circumstances in that recent clash with Raasel.

Mitbaahy had nothing like a clean run to the finish in that Sandown contest.

So a clear run for Roger Varian’s progressive one on Friday, should see him get in the picture. Mitbaahy is a current 4/1 joint-favourite* (odds recorded at 21:37 GMT on July 28th, 2022 at Bet365).

Other contenders

While those two are the clear big contenders in the race, it is still worth scanning through some of the other players who could come through.

ACKLAM EXPRESS is one of those after claiming a third place finish in the King’s Stand at Royal Ascot. He outran his odds very well there and he scored here on the 5f track as a juvenile in a record-breaking time.

KHAADEM lines up for Charlie Hills, who enjoyed all that success in this fixture with Battaash. So that makes the presence of Khaadem, who won the Palace House Stakes at Newmarket last time out, very interesting.

Another that could enter the reckoning is EQUILATERAL who has been going well in defeat this season. He was a credible third in the Sapphire Stakes at the Curragh a couple of weeks ago.

King George Stakes Trends Glorious Goodwood 2022

For the next part of this King George Stakes Preview 2022, we are going to dive into some of the trends surrounding the event. To do that, we cast an eye back over the last 20 editions of this Grade 1 fixture.

King George Stakes Trainer Statistics

It is straight to Charlie Hills at the top of the list for the leading trainer over the last 20 renewals of the King George Stakes. It has been four wins from nine runners in that span. Each of the victories were with Battaash. Hills has another crack at the King George with Khadeem this year.

Hills is the only trainer sending an entry to the race this year at Glorious Goodwood to have won the fixture before. Robert Cowell has had nine previous entries in this contest without success and could struggle to break that with Clarendon House, a 20/1 outsider this go around* (odds recorded at 21:37 GMT on July 28th, 2022 at Bet365).

King George Stakes Jockey Statistics

Ryan Moore and William Buick are the leading jockeys over the last 20 renewals, who have an entry this year. Both have won twice before. Moore got his victories with Moorhouse Lad in 2007 and then Kingsgate in 2009. On Friday he will be on the back of EQUILATERAL, teaming up with leading trainer Charlie Hills in an interesting combo.

The victories for William Buick came with Ordensia 2012 and then last year on the back of Suesa. Buick is on the back of 13/2 shot LAZULI this year* (odds recorded at 21:37 GMT on July 28th, 2022 at Bet365). Lazuli lowers his sights after struggles in the King’s Stand last time out.

For reference, Jim Crowley was on the back of Battassh in all four victories that the horse recorded in the King George Stakes. But he is not involved in this contest for the 2022 renewal. Frankie Dettori has failed to land the King George Stakes from 10 previous rides.

Other Key King George Stakes Trends

In five of the last seven renewals of the King Geroge Stakes, the favourite (including joint-favourite) has been in the top two on five occasions. Again, a large chunk of that is down to Battaash. Here are some more King George Stakes trends.

  • There has not been a winner at more than 10/1 in the last 20 renewals
  • Each of the last 20 winners were from the first 7 of the market
  • No headgear was on any of the last 20 winners
  • Each of the last 20 winners had placed within their last three starts
  • The last 20 winners had scored coming off a break of between 12 and 45 days
  • Each winner in the last 20 renewals had not been bigger than 9/1 last time out
  • A previous Class 1 victories had been recorded by 18 of the last 20 winners
  • 18 of the last 20 winners had contested at least a Group 2 before
  • Two of the last five winners have come from Stall 1

King George Stakes 2021 Review

SUESA claimed last year’s win after running into a little bit of trouble along the way. But he got his nose in front a furlong out, with William Buick having switched him out left for a straight shot at the line.

Seusa got the win from 7/1 and was three lengths ahead of the second-favourite DRAGON SYMBOL. It was a good run from Dragon Symbol under Oisin Murphy, and he was in contention all the way until it came down to the final furlong.

GLASS SLIPPERS filled out the places, doing all he could to try and stay in touch with the leaders from 1f out. But from that mark, he just couldn’t find another gear and was well held for third.

Last year’s renewal did include BATTAASH who was going for a fifth win in a row. He was shaping fantastically halfway through the contest but just weakened at the final furlong to come home seventh as the 2/1 FAV.

King George Stakes Tips 2022

The King George Stakes tips has to first have a look at that mouthwatering clash between MITBAAHY and RAASEL who are 4/1 joint-favourites* (odds recorded at 21:37 GMT on July 28th, 2022 at Bet365).

There is just so little to choose between them. It can be argued that Mitbaahy would have beaten his rival at Sandown last time out, having run into some trouble. That may be a very fair assessment too.

But Raasel has had proven course and distance form and his form just reads slightly better overall. So it’s Michael Appleby’s charge that just narrow gets the nod.

The other that we feel does enough to get on the shortlist is KHAADEM who landed a victory last time out in the King’s Stand at Royal Ascot. That was three months ago and so he has been refreshed by leading trainer Charlie Hills.

Still, on paper, it’s going to be tough to break the big two, but Khaadem is interesting nonetheless from 7/1* (odds recorded at 21:37 GMT on July 28th, 2022 at Bet365).

Glorious Goodwood Day 5 – Saturday
