Nassau Stakes Favourites and Outsiders

We start our Nassau Stakes preview 2022 with a look at how favourites from recent renewals have got on.

The Nassau Stakes has seen a lot of wide-open contests in the last decade or so.

It’s been a favourable race for longer-odds options.

Three winning favourites have cropped up in the last ten editions of the Nassau Stakes at Glorious Goodwood.

The most recent of the winning favourites was Winter in 2017. That was the third year in a row that a favourite had crossed the line first.

The last four editions have been a little more open, however.

Only in one of the last four renewals had a favourite or joint-favourite made it into the top three.

This year’s favourite in Nassau Stakes odds currently is NASHWA at 4/7* (odds recorded at 19:15 GMT on July 26th, 2022 at Bet365)

Longer-priced contenders

So the longer-priced contenders for the Nassau Stakes odds 2022 are going to be worth examining at the very least.

In the last ten renewals, there have been two 20/1 priced winners get home. Those were Sultanina in 2014 and more recently, Deirdre in 2019.

But the sweet spot may be in the range of 3/1 and 4/1 in the Nassau Stakes odds. Half of the last ten winners have been around that mark.

Last year’s winner was Lady Bowthorpe for trainer William Jarvis at 10/3.

As things currently stand in Nassau Stakes betting, only LILAC ROAD and DREAMLOPER are in single figures besides the outright favourite.

They are 6/1 and 8/1 respectively* (odds recorded at 19:15 GMT on July 26th, 2022 at Bet365).

About the Nassau Stakes

The first Nassau Stakes edition was held in 1840 and the early editions of the race saw it limited to three-year-old fillies only and at 1m.

It was around sixty years after its first running that it was moved up substantially in distance, going to one and a half miles. In 1911 it was trimmed back a couple of furlongs to its present distance of 1m 2f.

The next big change in the history of the Nassau Stakes was in 1975 when the first was opened up to more contenders. Fillies and mares after four and above are allowed to enter from that year onwards.

The race received its Group 1 status in 1999. The most successful horse in the history of the Nassau Stakes is Midday. She completed a hat trick of wins in 2011 in a dominant three-year spell.

The dominance of Midday also boosted the numbers for leading trainer Sir Henry Cecil. The 2011 victory with Midday moved him on to eight wins in the Nassau Stakes, a tally that leaves him as the all-time leading trainer.

Nassau Stakes contenders – July 28th, 2022

Heading up this year’s field for the Nassau Stakes as far as contenders go, is NASHWA at 4/7* (odds recorded at 19:15 GMT on July 26th, 2022 at Bet365).

The Gosdens have a cracker on their hands as the daughter of Frankel has gone from strength to strength.

It’s been three wins in four efforts so far this season by her. The pick of those was a Group 1 success in France last month, which she won by a short head.

Nashwa was a solid third-place finisher in the Oaks, never a threat to the winner Tuesday, but that was no disgrace.

LILAC ROAD brings some big claims of her own to the table in this one, for trainer Willie Haggas.

She too arrives in winning form after claiming a Group 2 victory against her own sex at York back in May.

Lilac Road had struggled in the Dahlia Stakes that same month, but everything seemed to come together for her last time out.

DREAMLOPER was the winner of this year’s Dahlia Stakes. So the 5-year-old also warrants plenty of respect.

She followed up that Newmarket win with a victory in a Group 1 Stakes over in France.

She wasn’t quite so hot last time out in the Pretty Polly at the Curragh, but a bounce-back performance isn’t out of the question.

Other contenders

VILLE DE GRACE started to come on strongly last autumn, winning back-to-back efforts at Yarmouth and then Newmarket. The latter of those was in Group 2.

Ville De Grace gave a tremendous account of herself in the Dahlia Stakes where she was beaten by a nose by Dreamloper. She was then three lengths back and well beaten by Lilac Road at York in May.

There are some outsider claims for CONCERT HALL as all three of her career wins have happened on the turf. The most recent of those was at Navan back in April.

To her credit, Concert Hall stepped up to the plate to land a fourth-place finish in the Oaks this year.

ROGUE MILLENNIUM is unexposed but has shown plenty of promise so far. She got off the mark on her debut in late April and made it two from two when she last a Listed contest at Lingfield.

Rogue Millenium also took a good seventh in the Oaks, before coming home as runner-up in the Group 3 Hoppings Fillies Stakes at Newcastle last month.

Nassau Stakes Trends Glorious Goodwood 2022

For the next part of this Nassau Stakes Preview 2022, we are going to dive into some of the trends surrounding the event. To do that, we cast an eye back over the last 20 editions of this Grade 1 fixture.

Nassau Stakes Trainer Statistics

The first thing to note here is that only two of the last seven winners of the Nassau Stakes were from a British trainer. Four of the last seven have been from Ireland.

Aiden O’Brien has had the best time of all with three wins in the last 20 renewals of the Nassau Stakes. The most recent one that he saw home was Winter in 2017, ridden by Ryan Moore.

That duo pair up with 14/1 shot CONCERT HALL for 2022* (odds recorded at 19:15 GMT on July 26th, 2022 at Bet365).

The only other active trainer with an entry in the 2022 renewal is Sir Michael Stoute. He has won three times in the last 20 renewals.

He has not been on the board in the race since 2004 winner Favourable Terms did the business.

Nassau Stakes Jockey Statistics

Ryan Moore is the clear leading jockey in the last 20 renewals of the Nassau Stakes with three victories. He most recently brought home Fancy Blue successfully in 2020, adding to his 2016 and 2017 victories with Minding and Winter respectively.

Only two other jockeys with an entry in this year’s renewal have had a taste of victory in this race before. Those two are Frankie Dettori and Keiran Shoemark.

Dettori is on the rank outsider ONE FOR BOBBY. Shoemark has a bigger chance on the back of 8/1 third favourite DREAMLINER* (odds recorded at 19:15 GMT on July 26th, 2022 at Bet365)

Other Key Nassau Stakes Trends

To help size up the 2022 Nassau Stakes betting landscape our racing experts now look back through some of the trends surrounding this fixture.

  • Each of the last 20 winners had recorded at least 2 turf wins
  • The last 20 renewals were won by a horse from the first 7 in the market
  • There was at least a Group 2 effort last time out by each of the last 20 winners
  • The last win had been achieved in a field of 5-13
  • All but one of the last 20 winners had won within their last four starts
  • A place finish had been earned within the last 2 starts by 19 of the last 20 winners
  • There have been 9 winning favourites in the last 20 renewals
  • The last five winning stalls have been 5, 3, 4, 6, 6 (most recent first)

Nassau Stakes 2021 Review

It was LADY BOWTHORPE who got the win last year with Keiren Shoemark in the saddle. Lady Bowthorpe had just been steady and composed throughout the contest.

She had plenty in the tank when she slipped into top gear in the final furlong. She just pulled away from the pack easily to score by a length and a half from ZEYAADAH.

Zeyaadah was in a good position throughout the 2021 Nassau Stakes, just tracking along and waiting for her moment to pounce. However, Roger Varian’s filly had no answer to the late pace that Lady Bowthorpe found.

JOAN OF ARC, a joint favourite alongside AUDARYA, took third place under Ryan Moore. She was at the front for a while, but while others found a new turn of pace, she just closed out the contest at the same pace.
