Will veteran Brando deliver on his favouritism?

8 year old BRANDO comes in as the 7/4 favourite for this Stakes action* (betting odds taken from Paddy Power at 16:30 GMT on Thursday, June 4th 2020). He missed out on a hattrick in last year’s Abernant Stakes renewal, just getting beaten out into third.

But the current form is still well there and he hasn’t shown any signs of slowing up. He impressed in a big field at the Larc Prix Maurice De Gheest Group 1 Stakes in August last year and sticking in Group 1 contests he took back to back fourth places in his following efforts at Haydock and Ascot respectively.

He is coming back from a 230 day break, but that’s freshness which should keep him well in the frame. He is lining up as the one to beat in this Stakes, especially with his track record in it anyway. Brando is generally always in the frame and can handle himself among this company.

Can Oxted take it to the next level?

In his last effort of 2019 OXTED put in a good showing to win the Portland Handicap at Doncaster in September from 14/1. The 4 year old is a very promising sprinter and deserves to be well respected in this contest.

He is going up the ladder well with progress and it will be interesting to see if he can live in this company. On the back of his latter 2019 efforts the threat is certainly there.

Oxted was second in his last effort at Newmarket which was in the middle of August. He will be fancied to come into the picture on Friday.

Keystroke aims for title defence

Last year’s Abernant winner KEYSTROKE is back for another crack. The 8 year old then has those claims to bring into the Newmarket renewal. He did fail to deliver a win anywhere following that success at the Abernant last year.

He didn’t actually look that big of a threat in any of his contests, the best of which were a couple of third-place finishes in Group 3 efforts at Newbury and Ascot. The last run that Keystroke had was at the Qipco British Championship Sprint Stakes at Ascot and was 10th of 17.

Can Emaraaty Ana upset the field?

Trying to make an impression back up at a higher level is EMARAATY ANA. The Colt did score a win on his last run, which was at Salford in September last year. That was the Class 3 British Stallion Studs Ebf Conditions Stakes.

Last summer he did try out among top company, albeit unsuccessfully. His August 2018 win at the Group 2 Gimcrack Stakes set him on his path.

But then Emaraaty Ana subsequently fell at the top level Juddmonte Middle Park Stakes, The 2000 Guineas where he was second from last and then the Irish 2,000 Guineas where he was third from last.

Too much too soon? Will the break and maturing have sharpened him up as he goes from 8/1 in this smaller field?* (betting odds taken from Paddy Power at 16:30 GMT on Thursday, June 4th 2020)

Predictions & Tips

The young sprinter OXTED is definitely one worth taking a look at this contest. There is probably going to be a lot more to come from him this season and if the favourite in this race is going to be upset, the Oxted looks the most likely to do it.

He seems to pose more of a threat than last year’s winner KEYSTROKE at any rate. He looked to be falling away from form at the end of last season and doesn’t totally inspire.

So it is to the favourite BRANDO which we would have to learn. He looks as fresh and sharp as ever and loves this race. His recent performances at top level was the class of Stuart Williams’ sprinter and it would surprise no-one if he got into the winners’ circle.
